Anyone that has been in Cool Springs TN lately, has most likely seen Dave Ramsey’s new house. The ‘pay with cash’ financial guru, radio host, bestselling author and founder of Financial Peace University has constructed a palatial home next door to Lee Ann Rimes house on King Richard’s Court in the Cool Springs Franklin area.

I don't know how to post the pics, but if you go to the link then you can see some views of the house.

Yes, I know the article is old, but I just stumbled across it and thought my fellow FPU fans would find it interesting....

I thought you would like this one. I celebrate his success and am most pleased with the description of his basement! I’m betting that his house to net worth ratio is similar to my buing a $100K home!

Good for him!

This is what’s possible when you’re free from the yoke of debt. I’ve been debt-free aside from my home for over 5 years, and it’s invigorating to say the least. To be able to walk into any store and know that I can buy something nice without fear of overdrafting or going over a limit is empowering.

Telling contractors and builders that I intend to pay in cash is almost always met with a smile and an offer to “knock $XX off the price.” Cash is still king.

"He Didn't Build That!"~ B.O.

A friend of mine installed the network in this house. Dave Ramsey is a hell of a guy. Great story of someone who made bad decisions, paid for it, dug himself out of the hole he created and now teaches others how to do the same.

the average monthly electric bill at Dave Ramsey’s house was $1,285 per month.

==========

That's extremely reasonable for a house of that size. On a regular basic, I don't listen to his show. What's his view on solar heating?

Why would you say that? It appears he paid cash for his house. He earned the money, he's got a right to do as he pleases with it.

From the article: "A mortgage does not appear to have been recorded for the property. That’s our Dave! "

Yes, but can he (or his heirs) sell it and get their money out?

I agree with all he says about how to live (debt free) even though I have not been able to accomplish that goal myself. But, methinks he’s a little aggressive in his investment of nearly $5 million in a house. That makes his resale market very limited and his taxes and upkeep very expensive.

Note how long his neighbor’s never occupied house has been for sale.

I find this detailed information of a citizen's private home offensive and written from a decidedly pejorative perspective with an apparent attempt to injure his reputation.

My gosh, this is still America where anyone has the opportunity to go from rags to riches without someone snidely pointing out how many shower-heads someone has in their master bedroom.

Did Obama himself write this?

If the whole of his net worth was tied up in the house, I would agree with you. And to be honest, with the country music and movie stars we have hanging around Nashville nowadays, $5 mil isn’t that out of line. I admit it’s not my cup of tea either. I’d rather have a bunch of land and a modest house.

I don’t think he has anything to worry about in either case. If either become a concern, well he’s been there and done that.

It is obvious to many, but certainly not all, especially as to the paying off your debts part. Credit card debt is killing people. Too many folks cannot delay gratification, and too many are too lazy to work a little harder if they want more stuff.

“What’s his view on solar heating?”

I’m not sure about any specific technology, but he has had callers ask about going green. He will generally walk them through the business case and in 99% of the cases they end up not making sense financially. However, if someone is debt free and does have the money, then they are able to afford it as a want.

His methods have helped my family and countless others. Imagine paying for what you need instead of credit. Same lesson needs to be applied to government. I think you are insanely jealous of his hard work.

Very true. As a guy who has led this class at my church about 6 times now, I can tell you that you would be shocked at the number of people which don’t get this concept. You would probably be shocked at the number of people who have no idea how to balance their checkbook.

Dave’s concepts are simple and they work. I have seen it in both my case and with students who take the class and apply it.

I agree with glyptol...even though he's a bit harsh.

I admire Dave's Christian faith but his show is just this simple schtick about pay off debt and don't spend money and never ever leverage.

Not leveraging in business is basically impossible for an owner.

He's just comes across as a guru to folks with little hope or poor discipline and shucks it up a bit for me. His success is a lightning strike successful as a radio host and he's preaching to hourly workers or salaried folks who've overspent.

The Osteen of finance.

and unlike most here I live in the same market...I drive by his home daily though I did not know it was his or that the other was LeAnne’s

Rimes used to live on Hillsboro not far from where I used to live next door to where Clay Jackson hosted Bush in 2004 and we freeped the protesters....back when I lived in town...Hillsboro Pike and Tyne Blvd.

That area of Williamson county to the east of Cool Springs has seen the biggest devaluation in our area...it's too close to office and commercial...and overbuilt since Dave bought it

For all Dave's preaching and he goes and builds a 13,000 sq foot home for 8-9 million just seems out of character.

Homes are not really investments unless you are extremely lucky or a builder who sells the home upon completion.

Homes are lifestyles.

No one needs that big a home...3-4000 feet will serve even the largest family baring FLDS...it's his choice but again it's a lifestyle and it's showy...and nouveau to be honest

just seems showy and tacky and a poor investment

and does not speak well for the King of Frugality

now had he bought 1000 acres in metro Nashville with an upside and a nice but less ostentatious house then i could have seen that as rich but fitting his preaching as looking at the long term but this palace he has will likely never appreciate...it will be a white elephant like most homes like that...now had he built a nice crib on Belle Meade Blvd in character with other tony homes there then in 100 years it would be a landmark...

I don't have a special beef with him but he just has that TV preacher quality I ain't crazy about even though I think he is genuine in his faith...it's his practice I see as thin

Dave's net worth is around 50 million according to folks who keep up with such stuff. He put around 10 million in his home plus furnishings...another million I'd guess. His property taxes are...guessing here...30,000 a year.

Just doesn't really live up to his frugality lessons

I don't care how folks spend their cash but if you preach..and I do mean literally preach one way then this just seems pushing the boundaries of taste for someone like him.

You completely miss his message. Yes, he teaches frugality....while one is cleaning up debt and building wealth. Then when you achieve that he also teaches that you need to enjoy the fruits of your labor and sacrifices. In fact, one of the more important lessons he discusses is how to learn to spend again and how much you can enjoy giving when you have a very good foundation.

His entire saying is to live like no one else (be frugal) so that some day you can LIVE like no one else (enjoy the fruits.)

Like Wardaddy, I live in the Nashville area and I actually work at Cool Springs. I can see this Xanadu from my office.

Although I don't know Dave personally, I have heard stories, perhaps driven by envy, that he is not completely aligned with his radio persona.

My wife is a Dave fan, so I certainly don't voice any misgivings. It's not hard to predict what he will say, so the show gets old after a while. Still, I agree with most of what he says - I have zero debt, including no mortgage, but I did not need to hear that from a radio guy.

And I don't really get the animosity to credit cards. Just pay off the whole balance every month, no problems!

I would find those stories to be pretty hard to believe. What he teaches is very simple and not difficult to be aligned with. Given that simplicity, a deviation would be to much of a risk to his “brand,” which is nothing more than his name and reputation.

I’d wager that most of those stories are being told by folks that are somehow connected to a product or service that benefits from debt/credit.
