Austin Chapman says he was "born profoundly deaf" and has "never understood" music--or the people moved by it.
"My whole life I've seen hearing people make a fool of themselves singing their favorite song or gyrating on the dance floor," Chapman, a 21-year-old filmmaker, wrote in a post on his studio's blog. "I've also seen hearing people moved to tears by a single song."
"[It] was the hardest thing for me to wrap my head around," he continued. "All music sounded like trash through my hearing aids."
But that changed earlier this week, Chapman says, when he tried a new pair of hearing aids for the first time in years:

If he listens to Top 40 radio, he’ll ask to remove the hearing aids real quick.

Beautiful story!
He has incorrect information about the earliest written music though. We have stuff way earlier than the 14th century. There are a few bits of Ancient Greek music left—the Epitaph of Seikilos and a Christian hymn from Oxyrhynchos, among others.

He ought to rush out and buy some Randy Travis CDs. The guy (Travis) needs all the help he can get right now.

It would be nice to know where he got the hearing aids, who makes them, and where to look for them.

Rap is music? Who knew? Add a leading 'C' to mark its proper place in the music continuum. Of course, this proves that I am racist, right?
As for this lucky gentleman, who can now hear music for the first time, my two suggestions, off the top of my head, are Barber's "Adagio for Strings" and Saint-Saens' "Symphony #3 (Organ)". Both never fail to invoke my emotions.

The article ought to go into some detail on the kind hearing aids that have really helped Mr. Chapman, who was profoundly deaf from the day he was born until he got the new hearing aids. For example, what was the technology of the earlier devices he used vs. the technology of the new devices. This could have been a much more helpful article.

Long ago I saw a documentary on deafness in which a woman, who appeared to be in her twenties, had a special, state of the art, hearing device (I think it might have been an experimental cochlear implant) turned on for the first time.Upon hearing voices, including her own,for the first time she burst into tears of joy.A very moving scene to say the least.

I wear hearing aids, and I was interested in what brand hearing aids he switched to that allowed things to sound so much better for him; alas, there’s no mention of it anywhere.

I saw a number of Freepers that are interested. Has anyone thought of contacting the articles author. Usually if you go to the article and click on the reporters name it gives you contact information.
