Video from the Smithsonian of what must be octogenarian Confederate veterans calling up the past.
You mean the 2nd war for Independence that failed?
#3 will be the tie breaker.
I made a sound similar to that when John Roberts made up his own law on Obamacare.
Won’t be long before we hear it again.
Sometimes called the 3rd War for Independence. ;-)
“The War of Northern Aggression” some call it..
I guess I was pretty accurate in my replication of it all these years. :D
I thought Billy Idol already told us.
If that would be the case, it would be important to get it down right.
THE REBEL YELL
None of us have ever heard it.
None of us ever will.
There’s no one left who can give it.
Tho you may hear its echo still.
You may hear it up near Manassas,
and down around Gaines Mill.
In December it echoes in Fredricksburg,
in May around Chancellorsville.
It’s the “pibroch of Southern fealty”.
It’s a Comanche brave’s battle cry.
It’s an English huntsman’s call to the hounds.
It’s a pig farmer’s call to the sty.
It’s a high-pitched trilling falsetto.
It’s the yip of a dog in flight.
It’s the scream of a wounded panther.
It’s the shriek of the wind in the night.
It was yelled when the boys flushed a rabbit.
It was passed man to man in the ranks.
It was cheered when they saw their leaders.
It was screamed when they whipped the Yanks.
But none of us will ever hear it.
Tho some folks mimic it well.
No soul alive can truly describe
the sound of the Rebel Yell.
-Monte Akers
When I was a kid in the 1950s, my grandparents cared for our oldest family member, a great great uncle who’d been with the 18th Arkansas Infantry Regiment. Several times I was the recipient of war stories from this civil war veteran. I never got to hear a Rebel Yell from him.
We may be needin’ to practice this yell agin’ ifin things continue the way they are agoin’ . We may well be needin’ to host on high the Bonnie Blue a second time if that feller in the White House even tries to cancel the election!
I SURRENDER!!!!!!!
The trill at the end kinda clears the old throat out.
A company in the dark of dawn doing all that caterwalling might just have some effect, ya think?
“others may find this interesting”
Yes I did. Thank you for the posting.
Outstanding! Thanks for sharing that...
Some references attribute the origin to the Scottish clans but the native tribes already had their versions too.
Very cool! Thanks for posting!
“You mean the 2nd war for Independence that failed?
#3 will be the tie breaker.”
You betcha!!
I guess this is what they heard.
Despite my comment, thanks for posting that. Those were some brave young men who became tough old men.
omg that's hilarious, and gutsy.
Is "the south's gonna do it again!" something to brag about?
Here’s a link where they took another authentic recording and then had it digitally modified to approximate a company.
Turn your speakers up for it..

Here’s hoping we see their like in droves in this country again, and soon. My ancestry is a history of rebellion, and I intend to continue it. I plan on flying a rebel flag high in my yard till the day they come take me away by force.
Desertion killed the Confederacy If the “Cause” wasn’t worth enough for the South to stay the course, we shouldn’t glamorize it today. Those were brave old men who have my admiration on a personal level, but that doesn’t change the fact that the right side won the war.
There appears to be a corridor of conservatives from the Gulf to Canada who have oil, manufacturing, veterans and a work ethic.
This time, it’s really State’s rights. We’ve learned how to pick cotton.

I have a 150 year old Bonnie Blue (in mint condition) that I can hoist if needed.
That was very interesting and brings home the fact that 150 ago years is not ancient history. I think some of the men were able to closely approximate the rebel yell while others didn’t have much left. North or South, American vets all.
They shipped their manufacturing base to China, we’ve built ours back up.
I think I'd probably run like hell if I heard it on the battlefield.
One Country, One Constitution.
If the feds choose to ignore the Constitution, there is enough vestigial social memory to re-ignite the old flames.
Don’t tell me both album covers came from the same photographer..
Interesting, but I suspect that the rebel yell was executed by soldier not generals and captains in that video.
I’m trying to imagine being 16 and in an all-out, do-or-die battle.
I’ve been in some hairy low-leverage situations at a penitentiary but I was older. Those old boys were young boys when they were pressed into service...
Sounded like snow geese.
Bump for later
You caught the soldiers, didn’t you?
2 of them. Here’s another one.

My wife’ grandma told us her uncles fought at the battle of Shiloh, but they were all dead by the time I met her grandma.
Snows and Blues honk a little more than a Catamount, must have some scary geese up your way.
The Germans would have said the same if they had won WWII.
“My ancestry is a history of rebellion...”
Mine too. I think the Lord put a strong genetic aversion to subjugation in some families. My Scots-Irish ancestors (and living relatives) are among the toughest and most belligerent people on this planet. I’ve always been proud that my great-grandfather fought for the Confederacy, as did two of my great-great-grandfathers and their brothers.
