Next from the EPA: Four-Gallon-Minimum Gas Purchases : For ATVs and Motorcycles-

The Environmental Protection Agency is going to require all consumers to buy at least four gallons of gasoline from certain gas pumps after the new E15 ethanol-gasoline blend is introduced into the market.(/)

The new regulation was revealed in an Aug. 1 letter to the American Motorcyclist Association, which expressed concern that the vast majority of Motorcycles and ATVs in use today aren’t designed to operate on E15 fuel and residual fuel from a pump that serves multiple blends might harm these tanks.

“The use of E15 will lower fuel efficiency and possibly cause premature engine failure,” Wayne Allard, AMA vice president for government relations, wrote in a June 20 letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson. “Use of E15 fuel voids many manufacturer warranties. In off-road engines, the effects can even be dangerous for users.”

The EPA responded that it requires that retail stations with blender pumps either dispense E15 from a dedicated hose and nozzle if able or, in the case of E15 and E10 being dispensed from the same hose, require that at least four gallons of fuel be purchased to prevent vehicles and engines with smaller fuel tanks from being exposed to gasoline-ethanol blended fuels containing greater than 10 percent ethanol.

In honor of the EPA I just dumped 4 gallons of gas on the ground. I am sure there will be those to say the world will now come to an end and we will all die.

There is not a small scooter or moped that will take 4 gallons of fuel.

Okay, so I pull up to a “certain gas pump” and pump one gallon of E15 and then stop. Now what? Will I be charged for four gallons?

What an incredibly ignorant regulation.

So they will flock to local airports to get 100LL while it is still available before the EPA FUBAR's that too, of which they are on track to do.

The alternative is racing fuels or find a State that doesn't use Ethanol and get some exported from their ( Omaha ?), I hear there are some...

This maybe a hidden anti- 2 Stroke move, as those that still mix fuel and oil need to use it w/in 2 weeks in order for it to be "Fresh"... They usually make it in small batches, maybe less than 4 gallons...

Work-around...5 or 10 gallon gas cans.
Drive to the gas station in a car or truck, fill up gas can/cans and then drive back home and fill up the tank.

Furthermore, who drives an ATV to the gas station anyway?
Many are already filled in the manner I just described.

Idiots are in charge.

We should have evicted all 535 the day they limited the amount of water I can flush. Can anyone tell me something that won’t be regulated 20 years from now (if we don’t have massive turnover in Congress and wind-down EPA, etc.)?

Arguing this with Obama’s EPA will be an exercise in futility. It’s time to get Obama out, and have some serious discussions about changing the EPA, starting with an end to ethanol in gasoline.

There it is... “Not only do we find it unacceptable for the EPA to mandate that everyone — including our members — buy minimum amounts of gas, but the EPA answer simply won’t work because of the sizes of many motorcycle and ATV gas tanks and the fact that off-highway riders take containers of gas with them on their trips, and most times those containers are much smaller than four gallons,” Allard said. And this... “The EPA has no business mandating how much gasoline Americans have to buy when filling up at the pump. What if a rider doesn’t have a motorcycle with a four gallon tank? Or if someone wants to fill a canister for their lawnmower or outboard boat engine, but it only holds 2 or 3 gallons?” Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) said today. Idiots are in charge at the EPA.

Like many Americans I own a weed eater. I have a two gallon gas can that I use only for that device due to the need to mix in two stroke motor oil.

Will the EPA mandate that two gallon cans can't be filled at a gas station?

I carry my 4 wheeler in the bed of the pickup and sometimes only it needs gas. If I fill the pickup, I can top off the 4 wheeler, but things don't always time out like that.

“So they will flock to local airports to get 100LL while it is still available...”

The writing is on the wall. The EPA would love to ban ALL internal combustion engines, especially the ones used for the personal enjoyment of freedom.

We’re supposed to be herded into inefficient electric vehicles, the ones that only have enough range for getting us to our work locations, and maybe nearby chores. That way, we won’t let anything distract us from our prime directive of serving our betters through our labors.

I wonder if local fire ordinances might require special storage for portable containers of gasoline greater than one or two gallons?

Unless you have a flex fuel vehicle, no car maker I know approves of using anything more than 10% ethanol blends and even the 10% blend is disaster in small engines. Has anyone at the EPA looked at the carbon footprint required to produce 1 gallon of ethanol? Ethanol is nothing but an expensive farm subsidy program and has done absolutely nothing to reduce our dependance on oil. Unfortunately many farm state members of Congress have become willing whores for the ethanol pimps.

Sounds to me like the EPA (cursed be their name and may a million camels stampede over their genitals) has admitted that E15 DOES destroy engines — without actually admitting it.
Hey, Mitt/Paul — add these morons to the list of bureaucracies to be dismantled, right behind DOE (BOTH of tbem), IRS, Labor, Commerce, most of State, and most of the rest of the alphabet soup sinecures for the private sector UNEMPLOYABLES in Malfunction Junction.

Some old BMW bikes had 6.3 and 6.1 gallon tanks.

http://w6rec.com/duane/bmw/tank/index.htm

And I think some of the big displacement superbikes get such poor mileage that they might have tanks over 5 gallons, but I’ve never actually checked on them.

But yeah, most bikes don’t have tanks anywhere near that big.

I guess the bike owners will need to wait until another customer buys more than 4 gallons of what the use in their bike instead of E15 and then use that same pump to fill their bike.

As usual, everything the government touches turns to s**t.

If you need gas with no alcohol, just wash it with a little water. The alcohol goes into the water, and the remaining gas is actually dryer than when you started. The only drawback is that you might lose a couple octane numbers.

I used to have a Honda ST-1300 that held 7 gallons. It had a 5 gal external tank and a 2 gal tank under the seat. 1 gal was needed to keep the fuel pump immersed. That bike had a heck of a range.

I did find it prudent however, to frequently top off with small amounts of gas especially when riding through long stretches of desert or other unfamiliar areas.

Many touring and sport-touring bikes have fairly large tanks. There are even some guys that mount an additional tank on the luggage rack/passenger seat area so they can really extend their riding range.

B I N G O!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Only took 12 posts to reach the proper conclusion.

For an agency responsible to end or at least reduce our need for foreign oil, the energy dept is a royal failure. The EPA is no help at all and could quite easily be ended. Only about 271 people in the right place could make it happen.

I live on the coast of the GOM.

We have gasoline pumps around here that are marked "Marine Gasoline" and is 100% gasoline, no ethanol. It is available for use particularly for outboard boat engines.

It is more expensive but the increased gas mileage provides a 14% dollar savings for me in my truck. Many people use it in their cars instead of the ethanol crap. Gasoline with ethanol additives gives terrible gas mileage.

Am I the only person that understood this story?

Here’s the deal. The EPA UNDERSTANDS THAT E-15 WILL DAMAGE MOTORCYCLES AND OFF-ROAD VEHICLES!!!!

They’re saying that E-15 should NOT be disbursed in smaller quantities than 4 gallons, which would be the size of a fuel tank for a bike or off-road vehicle.

Of course, there’s really no way to protect these engines from dumb owners who use E-15 in them.
