Pogo was right!
They don’t demand more “Diversity”, they demand less White people. If those choirs were all Black they wouldn’t say a word.
better to be born a half black, half American indian, female with a birth defect, and slight learning disability than a future Einstein white guy,.
Actual performance, of course, must be placed low on the list of priorities.
Not to be nitpicky, but it should read “fewer” White people.
On the other hand, your point is excellent and right on the money.
They used to put musicians behind screens to prevent bias in selection, so that the judges couldn’t decide based on gender, skin color or age.
Now we’re going back to the “bad old days”.
I have asked the MDJ to do a story on the diversity of the Orchestra.
I believe that it is mostly Caucasian and Asian. If that is so, the ASO probably demands performance over diversity.
I hate stuff like this. I was watching the Olympics marathon and all the good runner were from East Africa, how about we tie bricks to their shoes so that Chinese and Ukrainian runners can outrun them? You know, for diversity.
Diversity should mean that nobody is excluded or forbidden to participate based on race, religion etc. It should not mean a guaranteed place regardless of merit.
Most symphony orchestras begger the whole world for money. And go bankrupt on a sneeze. And rely heavily on the good will of philanthropists. (usually white)
(No, Moochele and BeeHOe are NOT in that group. They are in the group that believes musicians, “didn’t get there by themselves” and so should spread the wealth by donating their talents to the public at large.)
Wonder if they worry about “diversity” amongst their “donors?”
Maybe someone should remind them that the “majority” of their deep pocket “donors” are NOT “minorities.”
“Animal Farm” is becoming a daily way of life in this f**ked up country. I’m seriously considering just walking away from it all....becoming an expat. I’m serious.
Not too many blacks among professional classical musicians. At least that’s been my observation as a long time patron of the Kansas City Symphony. The same goes for the audience. In our new performing center, there are two halls, so we sometimes have simultaneous events. When a black performing group is in town, the well heeled KC black society is there in droves, dressed to the nines pouring out of their limos. Very few wander over to the symphony side, however. Its not how they choose to spend their money.
But we have a genuine oxymoron here ==> Classical Music vs African Americans.
“better to be born a half black, half American indian, female with a birth defect, and slight learning disability than a future Einstein white guy,.”
You forget Gay, lez,bi or trans!
I feel your pain. What alternatives have you considered?

If I was a much younger guy, I’d go to Russia. I’ve noticed that there is much more respect for the church, much less tolerance for the weirdos, (queers and mudslimz included) and much more freedom from regulation and taxes. (Flat taxes really are a good thing.)
Now that’s hard for an old cold warrior to reckon with. The Soviet Union was once my dedicated enemy. But as time has gone by, we have become what they were, and they have become what we were.
I hope I’m making some sense here. If you flame me, I’ll likely not respond. Its after my bedtime now.
Diversity my butt! Back to the basics, back to Bach, back to Beethoven, back to Mozart! As the great Dr. Sowell has noted, over or under-representation is the norm in all fields of human endeavor. I don’t know why but Germans are over-represented in the greats of classical music. So be it. Our symphonies must never pander with mediocrity. The San Antonio Symphony had a Beethoven Festival earlier this year. I never thought I’d ever get to hear the mighty Ninth in a live perforamnce, let alone symphonies 1 thru 8, but listen I did. Sublime! The Conductor announced that the Ninth drew more paying customers than any performance in recent memory. I’m not surprised, it’s a cornerstone of Western Civilization. (There, I said it.) I even suggested that our Symphony perform the Ninth once a year ala the Japanese National Orchestra, but my suggestion fell on deaf ears. In any event, I will not die with a live performance of the Ninth on my bucket list. Its been stricken off. Listenening to those nine symphonies was a highlight of my life. I’ll remember it as long as I have a memory. Ol’ Ludwig is up there with the immortals; Shakespeare, Milton, and Michelangelo.
Why would I flame you? You made an interesting observation. Dasvidaniya. Get some sleep. :)
