Phyllis Diller dead at 95

Legendary comedienne Phyllis Diller, who blazed a trail for a generation of female comics with her bawdy, self-deprecating stand-up routines, has died at age 95, according to TMZ. (The Associated Press and The Hollywood Reporter have since confirmed.)

Diller had been suffering health problems as of late: She recently hurt her hip and wrist in a fall and has been living under hospice care at her home. She passed away there, surrounded by family.

The comedienne, known for her wild hair and distinctive laugh, enjoyed a six-decade-long career in comedy: She started out filming a local TV special entitled "Phyllis Diller: The Homely Friendmaker" in 1952, and rose to fame on TV with a series of TV specials alongside Bob Hope in the 1960s. She later starred in several TV shows based around her act ("The Phyllis Diller Show," "The Beautiful Phyllis Diller Show") and often appeared on the seminal '60s variety show "Laugh-In."

God bless you Ms. Diller and may you rest in eternal peace with the Lord.

Thank you for all the laughs and smiles you provided over the years. Say hello to Fang for me!

She was a funny lady, especially when alongside Bob Hope.

Is it just me or do comedians die really old, or young? Old: George Burns, Milton Berle, Bob Hope, Phillis Diller (Don Rickles, Jerry Lewis still alive well into their 80s)

Young: Bill Hicks, Lenny Bruce, Dennis Wolfberg

And I thought I remembered her dying when I was a little kid! Ooops.

Don’t forget Jonathan Winters...he is still alive and kicking.

I think your suggestion is possibly true—there is great power in laughter, and I can see how it could help keep a person going well into the 80s, 90s.

On the other hand, you have guys like Belushi and Farley who self-destructed and brought upon themselves their demise at an early age.

She did have a distinctive laugh, and the current crop of female comedians(sounds like an oxymoron lately) could learn a thing or two from her. RIP Mrs. Diller.

RIP, another great one passes.

Isn’t it something that when I was a kid, she was considered “risque”?

My parents were fans, and I’m 61. We had a comedy LP.

Bless her, she had good gene stock.

So, so sad.

When I was growing up, these comics made the rounds on all the variety shows, Hollywood Palace, Johnny Carson, etc. Even as a child I knew all their names. Now I don’t know anyone, they are all too profane to listen to.

Remember Buddy Hackett, Phyllis, Bob Newhart, Jonathan Winters, Don Rickles, Rodney Dangerfield, Bob Hope, etc.

They might have had some dirty nightclub acts but you could turn them on, on TV and the whole family watched, and loved it.

I was 8 years old but I loved the stories about “Fang”.

I still remember when she was a secretary at KSFO back in the old days of Don Sherwood. They used to let her have the mike for a few minutes every now and then.

RIP pretty lady!
