Lets talk about secession. Not exactly the most suitable cocktail party conversation starter anywhere in the country, but take that notion deep into the heart of Dixie and you might find yourself running from the possum-hunting conservatives, trailer-park lifers, and prayer warriors Chuck Thompson encountered during the two years he spent traveling the American South asking the question: Would we be better off without em?
The result is a heavily researched, serious inquiry into national divides which is unabashedly controversial, often uproarious, and always thought-provoking. From a church service in Mobile, Alabama, where the gospel entertainer announces "Islam is upon us!" to a store selling Ku Klux Klan memorabilia on a quaint little street in South Carolina — Thompson lifts the green velvet drapes on a South that would seem to belong more to the time of Rhett and Scarlett than the dawn of the twenty-first century.
By crunching numbers, interviewing experts, and roaming the not-so-former Confederacy, Thompson — an openly disgruntled liberal from the Northwest — makes a compelling case for southern secession. What would the new nations look like if Virginia governor Bob McDonnell was elected as the first President of the Confederate States of America? If a southern electorate was left to fend for itself while the North did damage control on an auto industry decimated by cut-rate, union-defying southern voters for the last hundred years? If the BCS championship football game were replaced by a North vs. South Coca Cola/ Starbucks Blood Bowl™? If Florida went to the South and Texas to the North in the most complex land-and-population grab in American history?
Our “allies” have long been more of a burden to us than a help. Let’s face it, far more benefits have flowed from the New World to the Old World, than the other way around. We gave them potatoes, corn and tomatoes, they gave us smallpox, malaria and slavery. Heckuva trade.
That point of history ought not be lost on anyone. The notion of doing the job of our enemies for us while thinking that a mostly-conservative “half” of a non-united states would be stronger is an error.
After Antietam (9/1862) the Brits didn’t do too much heavy lifting on the CSA’s behalf.
Don’t forget about their giving us Marxism and Fabianism too. That has been the greatest poisoning of our society.
Texas could be a breakaway republic rather cleanly. They have their own power grid, their own ports, their own energy sources, their own cities of commerce and they’ll fix their border with Mexico the right way without Washington’s foot-dragging.
And if ObamaCare becomes law and everyone is forced to government-run health care, Texas has tons of hospitals and some of the finest health facilities in the country to take in all those who want to violate the law and get the care they can afford.
Truly, Texas’ economy could run circles around America’s without an EPA, OSHA and other impediments to business. They’re already one of the strongest economic states even with Washington’s meddling.
Why Secede? Kick the New England states out with the west coast as well as Ill. They have nothing in common with the rest.
I noticed the liberal author wants to send Texas to the North while the South keeps Florida in his idiot manuverings.
I can tell you, speaking as a seventh generation Texan, there isn’t a native Texan worth their salt that would agree to that scenario, and we would be happy to meet him at the Texas border to discuss the issue.
I often hear Mike Church on Sirius/XM Patriot advocating secession, and always think of the same question: “What happens to the nuclear stockpile?”
True dat! No one ever told this genius that you can’t have your cake and eat it too.

I’m a seventh generation Texan. My ancestors fought Mexico. The North cannot have Texas!
Texas would NEVER side with the North over the South. That being said, I’d have NO problem with secession by the South. I’d move there in a heartbeat from Southwestern Ohio.

The Conservative nation that emerges should immediately write into it’s constitution(Hopefully we just commendere the existing one as our own since the Libs seem to hate it anyway) an article specifically forbidding membership in any such organization as a United Nations, League of Nations, or other such sovereignty underminding organizations. We can ford our own foreign relations without handwringing over what Belgium might think of us.

We're already about as divided as a nation can get without updating the maps.
The emergent Red Nation would occupy the majority of the central and southern United States and the Blue Nation would actually be three distinct regions: West Coast, Upper Midwest, and Northeast.
The Red Nation would, through its conservative legal, fiscal, and welfare policies drive liberals along with hordes of like-minded non-productive, social malcontents and misfits across the borders into the Blue Nation. The Blue Nation with its nonjudgemental, openhanded liberality would welcome one and all ultimately leading to a crisis arising from welfare bankruptcy and moral degeneration. Blue Nation would split into three smaller states; Blue West, Blue Central, and Blue East, with each striving to create its own version of liberal Utopia.
In the meantime, Red Nation would militarize and build effective frontier barriers to prevent the remigration of starving, diseased liberals, welfare layabouts, and illegals once Blue State economies collapsed. With its ready embrace of free markets and business friendly economic policies, Red Nation would attract the investment needed to create the new economic infrastructure needed to replace that lost through the partition of the nation.
Etc.
Wonder of he realizes that, since slavery is no longer the emotive issue, a 21st Century secession might result in the Union consisting of just Massachusetts, Connecticut, Manhattan, The District of Columbia, and parts of California. Or that today’s demographics and distribution of wealth and industrial capacity are nearly the reverse of 1861.
