Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) bucked others in his party on Tuesday, defending Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) as a "strong Christian man with a wonderful family."
Akin has faced a firestorm of criticism from fellow Republicans, who have ripped his recent comments that women rarely get pregnant from "legitimate rape," with a number of them, including Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus and National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (Texas), strongly suggesting Akin should drop out of the race for Missouri's Senate seat. Akin has so far refused to exit the race.
But King, a close friend and ally of Akin's who campaigned for him during the primary, stood by Akin's side. He told a local television station that he didn't want to give his thoughts on Akin's specific remark because he hadn't heard it in context, but attacked those who were blasting Akin as focused on "petty personal attacks."
"I think this election should be about how did Todd Akin vote and what did he vote for and what did he stand for and in this case, I'm seeing the same thing, petty personal attacks substituting for strong policy," he said.

Akin is a Democrat-orchestrated attack. They put him there, the GOP should not be saddled with him. Now everyone is trying to pretend he was ever a conservative.

AND, more to the point possibly, I've yet to hear a male politician do so, BECAUSE there is so much flaming PRESSURE on him to dot every i and cross every t. Thank you Congressman King!!!!!!!
There’s no doubt that Todd Akin is a strong conservative Christian.
But that’s really not the point. Akin’s an idiot for making what are indefensible comments.
That IS the problem.
I think you need to check yourself.
Akin is a good man who misspoke, giving the floundering Obama campaign a lifeline and a distraction away from their own weak-to-nonexistent campaign agenda.
There is a reason the McCaskill/Democratic Party machine pumped 2 million bucks into the GOP primary to get Akin as their opponent. They knew this guy would implode, and sure enough he did in grand fashion.

Akin’s lifetime American Conservative Union rating is 94. McCaskill’s is 15.
Unlike you, I believe in winning and will donate to Akin’s campaign.
Its only a problem if the GOP wants it to be.
If they answered every baiting question simply with 'I disagree but thats for the people of Missouri to decide' the issue would die within the week.

What I find interesting is how many “conservative” FReepers have screamed for Akin’s head while either rushing to Scott Brown’s defense or ignored his call for the GOP to be more inclusive of the “good” pro abortionists.

A time for choosing is upon us.
And yet it is McCaskill that will continue to represent Missouri because Akin shot off his mouth, made a fool of himself and has no chance to win now. What good is that glowing ACU rating of Akin's if he is sitting home roasting marshmallows with his grandkids?
McCaskill knew Akin would make a bad statewide, general election candidate. That is why the Democrats poured money into the race to help him win the primary. How is this difficult for some people to understand?
The RNC and NRSC did support Akin before two days ago. They backed him over Palin/Tea Party candidates. Plus, the Democrats and McCaskill backed him too.
Because Brown's babble, while annoying, probably helps him win his Senate race in deep blue Mass. Akin's ridiculous comments ensure he loses his race for the Senate in Missouri. See the difference there? Brown probably helps himself to win a seat and keep injun Warren out of the Senate. Akin all but guarantees that liberal Claire retains a Senate seat for the Democrats for 6 more years. Is it really this difficult for you to understand? Really?
No Senator is perfect. No politician is perfect. The first attribute necessary is the ability to win. That is the minimum job requirement for a politician. If you can't win, no matter how nice you are, you are politically worthless. Akin is now political worthless. Brown, while flawed on many levels, is still politically useful.
