Anyone here ever use Angie's List? looking for a sheetrocker to install a 12x16 ceiling.

thus far, CraigsList is full of nuts and shysters and people who think you're crazy for asking for references from prior jobs.

My brother uses Angie’s List and has found good people on it. I use Yelp and found a fantastic plumber there, and also a great car repair service when my car broke down on a trip.

I would also like to know about that site

It seems like an unsustainable market plan

I mean who spend that amount of time looking for contractors?

Yelp is free. I think you ahve to pay for angies list which is insane.

I am a subscriber and have already found it well worth the fee to join.

what’s the fee? I’ve heard the Rush ad, never a price.

I’ve used Angie’s List. We were very satisfied with the work performed (plumbing, painting, tile, sheet rock).

The comments from locals on local businesses were very helpful in choosing a contractor. Also Angie’s List sends out coupons. The coupons are very similar to Groupon Coupons. They are often 30-50% off a normal price for a contracted service.

I also recently received an e-mail from Angie’s List asking for updated comments on several business (if I had used their services) at the request of other homeowners wanting updated comments before hiring the businesses.

As far as I am concerned the basic price for a one year membership was worth the cost.

I’d call a couple of home builders (get some references from your bank) and see who their sheet rock subs are.

I seem to remember that Angies List is an abortion supporter, but I could be wrong...

I think I confused Angies List with Emily’s List in post 9. My bad. Never mind.

I was totally turned off because the site requires you to enter your e-mail address before you register. Then it informs me that it’s a pay service. It would have been nice to know that before I was forced to give away info.

There is a similar service called Service Magic which is for free. I have had excellent results with them.

You are probably thinking of Emily’s List which is an abortion-rights PAC.

have you ever hired a bad contractor? it can be nearly as nightmarish as a bad divorce.

Might I suggest a free alternative? I use Kudzu.com for looking-up local providers, most recently to choose a new family dentist when our previous dentist retired. Check the link for a list of the locations that they cover and see if there is someone in your area.

I've never used Angie's List, but Kudzu seems like a similar idea (except it's free) - your neighbors offer reviews of local service providers; you can register (also free ) and add your own reviews.

Another approach is to go to the local drywall supplier and ask them who the better contractors are. I guarantee you they know. Although might not be willing to share.

That's a pretty small job ... probably not worth jumping through a lot of hoops for.
Look in the Yellow Pages and get three estimates. Or ask your neighbors, friends or relatives.
Lowes, Home Depot, etc., will give estimates too.
Any new housing developments in your area? Check on-site with the sheet rockers and maybe they'll fit you in on a Saturday for a decent price.

Go to Yahoo or Google or the myriad of free email places and get an address or two that you only use online for internet or business purposes.

I have about 10 different email addresses I categorize in my usage.

Found a good house painter, electrician and a window and door contractor through Angies List. Well worth the subscription to get verified local contractors in my case. YMMV.

I’d do it myself, but I don’t want it to look like my garage. ;)

I used in Tulsa once. There is a fee. The reviews were dated and when they didn’t get more current for nearly a year, I requested a refund.
