China stiff-arms FDA on jerky pet treat testing, reports show

Chinese government officials overseeing plants that make chicken jerky pet treats blamed for thousands of illnesses and deaths among American dogs have refused to allow U.S. inspectors to collect samples for independent analysis, newly released records show.

Investigators with the federal Food and Drug Administration came away empty-handed after conducting April inspections at four jerky treat manufacturing sites in Liaocheng and Jinan, China, according to the records.

The plants make pet treats sold by the St. Louis-based Nestle Purina PetCare Co., including the popular Waggin’ Train jerky brands.

Chinese officials stipulated that FDA officials could collect samples only if they agreed to specific conditions, including a requirement that the samples be tested in Chinese-run laboratories.

As a result, “no samples were collected during this inspection,” wrote Dennis L. Doupnik, an FDA investigator who visited the sites.

In addition, the reports showed that the Chinese plants conducted either no laboratory tests or only sporadic tests of the raw materials, including meat used in treats fed to many of the 78.2 million pet dogs in the U.S.

Yeah, in those treats sulfites are a concern and sodium levels, possibly. Moderate amts okay.

Along the same lines, years ago my Vet confided to me there is no such thing as "dog food." Although, strangely, she does sell quite a bit of it from her lobby... Now my dogs have received a lifelong varied meat and vegetable diet (with some nightly ice cream), and all have lived very extended, healthy lives.

And, no, Chinese food is never on the menu.

Don’t forget rice in their diets. It is easily digestible, and goes well with chicken!

“That would do it for that product. I would pull them all off the market,” said Kucinich. “Fine. You’re done.”

It’s scary that I’m agreeing with Dennis Kucinich.

Or, just block imports from those factories until they comply.

No problem, the paperwork will show that not a single gram of this crap came from those factories...

When I buy my dog food of any sort I look for where it was made. If it was made in China, I do not buy it, no exceptions.

That is what a sane President would have done, but Obama is scared shitless of the ChiComs.

It would seem so was bush.

My dog is deaf and blind and I went overboard on treats for her, the vet asked if she liked green beans, I said she loved them and will eat anything I eat...he told me to give her green beans for a treat as she really had to lose some weight. One can last about 2 days and I also put a few in with her dry dog food...

I've known a number of people who BARF (bones and raw food) their dogs. It's a lot of work, but as far as I know, it's not a bad diet.

At the moment, we're feeding our dogs "Earth born" dog food. If this doesn't work out, I'm not sure I will ever trust another manufacturer of dog food.

Our dog was having infections on the skin inside his ears all the time (would come and go with treatments). The vet finally sent blood work in to test for allergies. Came back with a list 4 pages long of stuff that he is allergic to! He’s on a “meat-lovers” diet now.

We have options, don’t we. I was making dog food and treats and my vet asked why I was reinventing the wheel.

I have fed my dogs raw meaty bones for years. My vet bills have dropped to nothing (except any shots required by law).

It is not work, and it isn’t hard. Don’t pay attention to Billinghurst, Read Tom Lonsdale, he is much better. You can google his website - he is an outstanding vet from Australia.

Do not give doggie vitamins. Lonsdale explain why. No need to grind up veggie slop, either. And, either make your own pet treats, or buy from a trusted source, such as “SitStay” (online, very reliable, good shipper)

You will love the results, and be surprised how easy it is to toss out some raw meaty bones for your dogs dinner, and watch the joy in his/her face as they eat the way God planned.

We feed our dog “Ol’ Roy”, and table scraps. Hot dogs make good treats, and they are cheaper than buying dog treats. If it were just our dog we are feeding, he could eat his meals with everyone else, but the neighbor’s Anitolian shepherd is over here at 6am for breakfast, and he spends most of his day here. On some weekends, our other neighbor’s little pit bull, Boston terrier mix is here. He spends most of his life on a chain, so when he comes he likes to play, eat, follow people around, and eat some more. Just in the past week or two the Anitolian has started walking down the street where he collects a couple of pups to bring over. We are trying to not let that go any further. I’m going to get my backhoe, cement mixer and kids, and build a better fence.

No, just what ever canned green beans are on sale. I don’t get the french cut, just regular green beans...they appear magically in her bowl, she checks it often...LOL just a tablespoon or 2 for an evening snack. A few during the day...only 1 spoonful then......

If anyone is feeding their dog anything from China, they might as well give the dog up to the local police dept for target practice.

what you said.
