Word For The Day, Thursday, August 23, 2012 - apophasis
WSJ | 23 August 2012 | The penultimate sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

apophasis [uh-pof'-uh-sis] noun
1. denial of one's intention to speak of a subject that is at the same time named or insinuated, as “I shall not mention Caesar's avarice, nor his cunning, nor his morality.”
2. the raising of an issue by claiming not to mention it (as in “we won't discuss his past crimes”)

Example sentence:
Obama similarly employed apophasis when he asserted that "nobody accused Mr. Romney of being a felon."
--James Taranto, Best of the Web, WSJ, August 21, 2012

Etymology:
Late Latin, repudiation, from Greek, denial, negation, from apophanai to deny, from apo- + phanai to say. First Known Use: 1657

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I won’t discuss Hillary’s elephantiasis
Or cruelly use words of apophasis
Despite cankles, shrill voice
She’s a much better choice
“Who was born here” (I added for emphasis)

It isn't easy to get up early enough to get my comments in before someone says something worthwhile but here's trying:

apophasis

a pop has sis just means my aunt. Course you'll notice I had to use an extra “s” but if Mississippi can do it so can I.

Timothy Cardinal Dolan of NY is scheduled to offer the benediction at the close of the Republican National Convention in Tampa next week. In apophetic form, he announced that it was just to be viewed as a prayer, not necessarily a political endorsement. He then announced that he would be pleased to perform the same service for the Democrats, which would be awkward since he is currently suing the Democrats.

I love Cardinal Dolan.

There is no apophasis from Joe Biden who, by the way, has known three presidents intimately.

No one's actually confirmed that Obama is an alien who styles himself as a god, bent on global domination....

It’s unfortunate however that Dolan invited Obama to the Al Smith dinner.

Cannot wait to see the jokes about Obama daring to come to the dinner considering all the Catholics there.
