News headlines over the past few years have linked cat ownership to everything from cancer to craziness, but new studies suggest that cats are actually beneficial to human health, and may even reduce our risk for cancer and other diseases.
Reports in this week's issue of Biology Letters, for example, counter the tabloid-suggested link between cats and human brain cancer.
Marion Vittecoq of the Tour du Valat research center and her colleagues conclude that cats should not be blamed for human cancer. In fact, studies show just the opposite.
Vittecoq told Discovery News that "according to our knowledge, studies that have focused on the link between cancer and cat ownership so far have found either no association at all or a reduced risk of cancer in cat owners."...

We built our retirement home to be indestructible insofar as critters are concerned. Ceramic tile floors, metal and stainless steel furniture—all stuff that can be hosed off whenever necessary. Cat tree, dog chew toys, don’t have a thing that can’t be laundered. No worries.
Only issue—our decor fits the profile of that of a serial killer. After reading that, I softened it with a little honey oak and some tumbled slate.
Usually, people who make blanket statements about cats, dogs, etc., just haven’t been exposed to the right cats and dogs. My husband (big, tough, recovering Marine) considered himself a dog person until the four cats wrapped their little paws around his heart. It’s a matter of education.
Other people who actively dislike animals seem to have glitches in their hardwiring or a certain poverty of spirit. They’re to be pitied. We’re given this wonderful smorgasbord of enjoyable creatures and situations, and they’re unable to enjoy them. It’s too bad.
Yeah, it's a shame that everyone doesn't experience the affection of cats..and dogs...and treats them with proper respect. To me, they aren't disposable....
I agree with you....those ppl are to be pitied....I just get depressed that they are out there because cats/dogs are dependent on people. It breaks my heart that the pet is treated so unfairly...

Our Laurencia -- another female orange tabby, which I'm told is a little unusual -- is also extremely affectionate. Almost like a puppy.
