Right-handed humans vastly outnumber lefties by a ratio of about nine to one, and the same may have been true for Neanderthals. Researchers say right-hand dominance in the extinct species suggests that, like humans, they also had the capacity for language.
A new analysis of the skeleton of a 20-something Neanderthal man confirms that he was a righty like most of his European caveman cousins whose remains have been studied by scientists (16 of 18 specimens). Dubbed "Regourdou," the skeleton was discovered in 1957 in France, not far from the famous network of caves at Lascaux....

"The long-known connection between brain asymmetry, handedness and language in living populations serves as a proxy for estimating brain lateralization in the fossil record and the likelihood of language capacity in fossils," the researchers, led by Virginie Volpato of the Senckenberg Institute in Frankfurt, Germany, write.

I’m not prejudiced against left-handed people, but I honestly don’t understand why we don’t actively teach kids to write with their right hand. Any time I see someone writing with their left hand it looks so ridiculous.
<...waiting for the outrage to build....>
that's a joke !
Your sarc is dry and funny....either that, or you went to the Todd Akins school of logic and human reproduction.
Maybe lefties are preparing for our eventual Arab or Chinese overlords. Writing with your left hand in a Western country makes as much sense as walking backwards, but is a distinct advantage if you’re writing in Arabic or Chinese.
So it’s logical to write with your left hand? Please elaborate.
Yeah I remember when my first grade teacher turned me into a righty with a ruler across the knuckles. I still throw and shoot left-handed.
Here's how it went: They lined up all 18 corpses and tossed a ball to each.....One swatted it, one ate it, one gave it to his wife, one fed it to his jack ass, one buried it, one traded it for beans, one brought it to school for show and tell, one cooked it with spaghetti, one used it for an earring, one said "wheel", one said "fuutball", one said "head"...one said "Are these guys stupid?" and they all went back to their watering hole.

That's funny; I consider most right-handed people to be Neanderthals. Including people who make remarks about, "why don't we teach (force) all children to write right-handed?"

Nothing wrong with shooting, throwing, batting, or fencing left handed, but writing with your left hand makes absolutely no sense since you can’t see what you’re writing. Just seems like common sense to me.
I am somewhat left handed. I cannot write at all with my left hand, as I do not seem to have fine control for writing or drawing with it. However, I throw left handed as I have good control and power, but I punch right handed as I do not have control or power to punch with my left hand (different muscle groups I guess). As far as all other mundane tasks (such as eating), I use either hand interchangeably.
Oh yeah, I throw left handed, but bat right handed, but golf left handed, and bowl right handed
And 46% were Republican, 36% Democratic, and 18% Independent
Totally gay! LOL!
0bama and Bubba Klinton are lefties - care to reevaluate?
Morality aside, one has to admit becoming POTUS is a measure of success on one’s life. But technically, I’m ambidextrous:)
My third grade teacher(Phillipino-Catholic: very superstitious...Phillipinos that is) in Catholic School wouldnt let me write in her class unless it was the right hand. I stopped writing, the report card came, and my mother let her and I presume the Principal have it! Problem solved. I’m the oldest of three brothers. All left handed.
The ones you notice are those who had stupid teachers. Others it would take you a while if ever to notice they're left handers. Ok, so when you're writing with your right hand, you have the top of the paper pointed to about 11 o'clock. Lefties need to merely tilt their papers to a 1 o'clock position so as not to do that ridiculous upside down wrist thing.
Ha, we left handers laugh at you right handers when eating but we're more polite and don't bring point it out. Look at a table setting. The fork is on the left and the knife is on the right. You righties have to fumble switching hands when cutting something whereas we lefties just continue to eat without all the fuss. Guess who gets to the seconds first, lol!
And yes, we are better looking, smarter and funnier.
its logical to write with whatever hand you were born to write with.
Forcing a left-handed to be right-handed causes reduced activity in the dominant right hemisphere and increase activity in the non-dominant side. Since creativity and imagination are dominant parts of right brain, they will remain under-developed and the left-side of the brain sees increased activity that deals with reality, facts and logic
characteristics that are opposite of the persons true potential. The consistent use of non-dominant part of brain affects the personality while growing up and the adaptability can be difficult. Forced right-handers have to work a lot harder to improve handwriting, take more time to adjust in using tools like scissors and knives, are unable to perform better at activities (like sports) than natural right-handers, get tired easily and may even have language difficulties due to possible dominancy conflict between the two halves of the brain.
I had a step-monster that did exactly that to one of my step brothers. I still recall her domineering him and forcing him to stop using his left hand naturally as a baby. Poor kid is now a liberal lawyer, go figure.
Left handed when writing and eating. Right handed when using scissors. Ambidextrious throwing, batting, golfing, etc.
You still can’t see what you’re writing if you tilt it to the 1 o’clock position. I don’t understand why it’s not taught in schools, that you should pick up your writing instrument with you right hand and use it. Just like shaking hands.
Hey, walking backwards might spur the creative juices too, but it’s a disadvantage to walk backwards because you can’t see where you’re going. Just like you can’t see what you’re writing when you write with you left hand unless you’re writing in Arabic or Hebrew.
I’m Left-handed writing and eating only (can do those right-handed too - to a point)- everything else is Right-handed. I’m Left-eye dominant too which I believe is why I’m lousy at sports :)
One really good thing being a lefty grants....you can use your computer mouse and write at the same time :>)
right handedness is about 85 to 90% worldwide. do you expect that 85 to 90% of the Asian Hebrew group browbeat their children into writing left handed, so as to make them fit that template and while at it turn them into mentally unhealthy human beings??? .....that was a rhetorical question...I know the answer.
Yes, I can. Not that I need to see what I’m writing any more than I need to carry around a mirror to see that I’m chewing gum, but whatever. Soldiers start marching with their left foot but you don’t see them having to look down at it to make sure it’s doing what they want it to.
My former wife, a natural southpaw, was "switched over" by her mother at the ripe old age of about four. She never really recovered from it. Her penmanship was entirely legible, but any time a tool or utensil was involved, she turned clumsy.
As long as she was left-eyed to begin with, when she was ready to learn to shoot, I switched hands and taught her how to hold the .22 rim fire rifle left-handed, then how to hold the revolver left-handed. She had a little trouble with the right-handed rifle's operation, but the revolver, a Smith & Wesson K frame .22 long rifle, seemed perfectly sensible to her. She eventually realized I'd "tricked" her; by then, however, she was a fully safe, reasonably accurate shot.
Hussein had many stupid teachers and advisors from childhood on. Besides, I already explained to not do that ridiculous wrist thing all that’s required is to tilt the paper toward 1 o’clock. Hussein isn’t smart enough to turn it so it remains at 11 making him write upside down.
But you’re determined not to believe any of us left handers. Close minded, yes? Again, I hold my wrist as it should be and can clearly see what I’m writing. I’ve had people who have known me for years who will suddenly one day blurt out they didn’t know I was left handed as if that something to be shocked about - but, but you don’t write all funny!!! - uh, no, why should I. You probably know many left handers but they just don’t happen to write upside down for you to notice.
So just to understand correctly here, you’re saying that when you write, the written words show up above your hand as you write them. Correct? I’m trying to visualize how you see the words without your fingers getting in the way.

My left-handed sister had a good teacher (not everyone in our school system did), she uses the technique you describe, and has done so without problems for over fifty years. :’) Older folks and other folks (including a retired teacher who was an older family member) had told my parents to teach her to switch to right-handed, they didn’t fall for it. Thanks Renfield. To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list. The Neandertal Enigma"Frayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127] |

For centuries we've told our children anyone can grow up to become president.
Obama proved it...
It looks so.... gauche.
Pretty much proves that us lefties are the more evolved humans.
Actually, I think a theory needs to be researched that proves that right-handedism is a genetic holdover from pre homo-sapiens.
What percent of a gov research grant does the researcher get to claim as his pay? I’m wanting to get a new Lamborghini. How much should I say this research is gonna cost?
Why do you need to see what you are writing? Don't you know what you are writing?
I am right handed but I never look to see what I am writing. I know what I am writing. If you are watching your hand and have to read what you are writing to know what you are writing then you were probably not taught properly.
I dont know to whom of you I should respond first, so I will just write my thoughts on t he comments I see on this thread and address to each of you
if the shoe fits, wear it.
First of all, these scientists are presumptuous to assume that they can know whether these Neandrathrals were either right handed or left handed. But that is to be expected of pseudo scientists.
As a true scientist, I can say unabashedly that only the few, most intelligent of the homo sapiens are left handed. And as libertarian27 posted, everyone is born right handed; only the greatest overcome it
And again, libertarian27 posted, Only LEFT-HANDED people are in their RIGHT minds.
I am left handed. I see what I write as I right it, just as a LEFT minded person does when they write with their wrong hand. Teachers who dont know better are responsible for the kind of LEFT HANDED writing referred to in one of the posts. And I would wager I write more legibly that most of you out there who are so proud of being wrong handed.
When I shoot a pistol, I can handle and shoot it accurately and well with either hand dominant. How many of you wrong handed people out there can say that?
When I play golf, I stand on the right side of the ball.
Teachers who tried to make wrong handers out of left handers were totally incorrect and damaged many of those in doing so.
And there is nothing more ridiculous than a prejudiced wrong hander, such as you who thinks Any time I see someone writing with their left hand it looks so ridiculous.
A few years ago, the three most intelligent men in this country were running for President and all three were LEFT handed. Now, some of you may not agree regarding their intelligence, but they were all very successful men in other ventures, either in politics or in business or both, and they were all candidates for the highest office in this land an office to which most of you reading this will never aspire.
The wrong handed people of this world can only tolerate a few highly intelligent members of our species, which is why there are only a few of us who are left handed.
For years lefties were forced or shamed into trying to write with their right hands. I think that educators finally decided there were signs this was unhealthy. I don’t know what the signs were. I am left eyed and somewhat ambidextrous so I wonder if I was pushed to use my right hand. I know that my penmanship is not the greatest.
I think the figure is 15% lefties which would be a little less than 1 in 6.
Right On ~ Right On !!!
LOL
I've read that left-handed stroke victims recover quicker because they use both sides of their brain more so than the right handed population - also use both sides of their body and can compensate for side loss.
I've adapted to a right-handed society, doing many things right-handed - but can also do them left-handed (ie, raking, shoveling snow, construction tasks-hammer, etc.)Most sports I perform right handed, it was the way I was taught...shooting however, later in life, I was shown both ways - I could be a gun slinger :>)
I will propose that right-handed people should practice different tasks using their left hand - get those juices flowing on the right side of their brain.
It's time for them to Evolve ~ :)
