I think it was Calvin Coolidge.

He had a budget surplus every year and the national debt was reduced from $22.3 billion in 1923 to $16.9 billion in 1929.

He cut the top tax rate from 56% to 25%.

Thank you for that. Always enjoy reading anything about President Coolidge.

Calvin Coolidge also lost his 16 yr old son from a blood infection on a blister while playing tennis. Although clinical depression was not understood at the time, Coolidge was never the same after his son’s death. He said the power and glory of the presidency left him. He believed his son might not have died had he not become president.

Coolidge had signed the Indian Citizenship Act giving full citizenship to all Indians just a month before his son’s death.

Good trivia facts: Coolidge was the only living president to have his image on a U.S. coin. It was for the nation’s Sesquicentennial anniversary in 1926.

He gave more press conferences (529) than any president. And they called him Silent Cal ?

His was the first presidential inauguration delivered on radio. Maybe that’s another reason Reagan liked him.

Coolidge had to deal with the Great Mississippi flood of 1927. He did not believe in federal funding for flood control or personally visiting the region regarding it as political grandstanding.

You really don’t know the difference in historical periods?

You really think that someone being born into being a democrat in the 1930s and voting for his last presidential democrat in 1948, and then emerging as a conservative activist, then conservative politician, and eventually history’s conservative hero, is the same as someone born republican switching parties because of Reagan, leaving the GOP BECAUSE of Goldwater, the Reagan Revolution, the abortion wars, Vietnam and the 1960s, the 2nd amendment wars, Carter, Clinton, LBJ, Mondale, to follow the 1980s by becoming solely for democrats and fund raising as a democrat, and voting democrat?

You don’t see any difference? Reagan emerged from being a 2 term California Governor, during the height of the 1960s, with a reputation as a fire breathing right-winger.
Mitt Romney emerged from a failed single term in 2006 with no chance at reelection, a 34% approval, and a reputation as a hard liberal.

Romney despised Reagan and conservative America.

now, The only thing I said is that if FR was around in the late 70s, some FReepers would say that Ronald Reagan is not conservative enough.

Now, I believe the last 2 conservative presidents were Silent Cal and Ron Reagan. of course, both came from different eras, but both did a great job.

Since many of us freepers were around in 1979, including JR, I think that we can say that while Mitt Romney was leaving the party because of him, that FR would be ecstatic FOR HIM, and would be the most unified ever, even far greater than for the young, Reagan in a skirt, Governor Palin.
