That said here is a link to the Main Page Black Rock City

I always wonder what the carbon footprint of Burning Man is. Given that so many attendees appear to be hippie types, the ones who love to lecture about carbon footprints, I always wonder how they justify their carbon footprint.

"Live yada yada"

Wish I hadn't looked. 200 hooded people straight out of Conan casting carrying rows of cowbells. Where's Zimmerman when you need him...

Actually, yes. Though somewhat perverted from the original.

Yes! Very similar. Also kinda like the Celtic Fire Festivals at the end of January, early February. Up Helly Aa in Lerwick is one of my favs!

If I ever have the money I would love to take a major symphony orchestra to Burning Man. The folk there would most likely love it.

Carbon footprint? HUGE!

A little known fact is that the original Burning Man included a lot of hunters, NRA members, shooting enthusiasts who spent the week firing various small arms in the middle of the desert.

This year it's a weapon free zone last time I checked.

BTW these folk - for the most part - might be a little out there but NOT OWS types.

doesn’t making it a weapons free zone take some of the freedom out of the event?

What is the purpose of this? Peace, Love, Dope? I used to follow the Dead in he 1980s. Same crowd?

Yes. That was a big problem with a lot of folk this year.

BLM was involved also.

All of the above however of course I disagree with dope. You don't go into the desert for a week and do drugs. Well you don't do drugs period!

It's kind of a big Libertarian thing.

A great video and musical summary of Burning Man from last year.

Better than you might imagine! Would make a GREAT Johnny Cash Song.

Think of the awesome amount of money and energy wasted on the Burning Man event! If all that money was used for humanitarian purposes, imagine how many hungry could be fed, how many homeless could be sheltered, how many trees could be planted, how much C02 could be prevented from contributing to Global Warming just from that event alone!

Of course now that NASA's budget has been slashed and future space projects have been aborted, there's probably no further need for cash to finance those endlessly repeated liberal goals. /Sarc

There will be another "burning man" next week - Old Man Gloom.

The Burning of Zozobra

Yeah, New Mexico is kinda weird.

I have a friend who has been going to Burning Man for years. It is a real culture. He spends the year socializing with other Burners, planning and creating the artwork for the following year. He is very libertarian, somewhat conservative-leaning engineer and software developer. I have learned there is also a strong libertine streak throughout the event.

From their principles: “Leaving No Trace”— “Our community respects the environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them.”

My friend has told me that it really is left clean every year. You can find out a lot more from their website.

Our #2 son would LOVE to go to Burning Man. He has a lot of friends in that ‘subculture’.
