The Tomboy character Jo went on a nun's retreat in one episode and decided to become a nun. She wanted to slow down and thank God,and do something worthwhile. Also,Mrs. Garrett mentioned her faith and that no one could shake it.
I was floored! They mentioned God in a positive way,not a mocking way. Why can't more shows be like this?
Because liberalism is so totally in control of the entertainment industry, positive messages about religion are just not permitted anymore.
Positive messages about homosexuality are in, positive messages about religion are verboten. Liberals run the entertainment business, and their liberal views are the only ones allowed.
Today the tomboy character would be a lesbian.
Because that was the feeling of the nation in the 80s.
It is now time for GenXers to bring that back.
I cringe to think what the next thirty years will bring.
From what I understand Blair(Lisa Whelchel) was (still is) a devout Christian during he time on the show, and would not participate in plots that involved premarital sex.
Also being the 80s, I’m not surprised that such a display of faith was a part of a popular sitcom and not shown in a negative light.
These days this show wouldn’t make it to air unless half of the girls were lesbians and already had 2 abortions.
Agree 100%.
There was an episode of Laverne & Shirley in which they ran into a long-lost friend of theirs from high school (who may have been a bit wild then?) and she had become a nun. As I recall the nun character was treated with humor and respect.
Man, I loved the ‘80’s! When Reagan won the presidential election I was ecstatic. The Reagan years were truly filled with real hope and change. It was “Morning in America” and everything was looking up. I’ve never felt so positive about the direction of the country and the world since.
I know she liked boys a lot.
You’re right about the lesbian thing.
IIRC, the actress who played Natalie is a lesbian.
Nowadays that would be mocked.
I’ve seen that episode several times and loved how Laverne brought out all the Catholic items.
I believe she put out a big Bible as well.
And Shirley was very careful about what she said,LOL.
I was 5 when the assassination attempt on Reagan took place. I don’t remember much about the 80’s,except that school was rough because of the nasty kids.
She is?
On ‘Good Times’,Florida Evans was a devout Christian,as was Florence Johnston from ‘The Jeffersons’.
I was working midnight shift at the time. When I woke up in the late afternoon and heard President Reagan was shot I was crushed.
Thank God he survived and led this nation and the world towards freedom.
I remember ALF as well. I’ve been watching reruns on the Hub and it’s still a funny show but somewhat dated.
And they’re supposed to be the tolerant ones.
And they’re supposed to be the tolerant ones.
The crowd was transfixed.
My Wife and I almost fell over laughing.
Check for a good bio on Mindy Cohn. I could be wrong, but I seem to recall reading it some where. I’ve tried to search myself but can’t get through to some of the sites which would say.
The actress who played Blair’s cousin came out as a lesbian. I believe her name is Geri Jewell.
They were that into it? That’s a hoot.
I remember watching it when I was 10. I loved it.
Not ALF!
Watch Family Ties! :)
My sister spent a semester in Russia in ‘93 or so, not long after the breakup of the USSR. The Russians were completely nuts over Dynasty, which they’d just started getting; it meshed perfectly with what they’d been taught about capitalists their entire lives.
I did. I could only stand so much of that liberal malarkey.
But at least Steven and Elise Keaton weren’t hypocrites.
She had been married (to a guy) for 12 years, but later did come out as a lesbian. She is also afflicted with Cerebral Palsy. I think she was also a stand-up comic if memory serves.
It was Reagan’s favorite TV show because of the Alex P Keaton character.
There a re a lot of Alex P Keaton’s in their late 30s and early 40s. One is running for VP. ;)
Family Ties is on Netflix and my daughters have been watching it. After about the second episode, my 11 year old said âThis is a good show because the kid (Alex) is smart and the parents are stupid hippies.â I about died laughing! My other daughter said âAll hippies aren’t stupid, but most do smell.â We laughed again. They also laugh when I say I had a shirt and hairstyle at one time like Malory had!
Haha! You have smart kids. :)
Also — and let me preface this with my opinion that Roseanne Barr is a loonie — show them the “Taxes” episode of “Roseanne.”
Just that one episode. That show was good the first season and then it went off the deep end.
But according to the MSM ALL "evangelicals" and "born again Christians" are inbred white hicks. Who probably haven't evolved enough to think civil rights= gay rights.
Notice how the media never teases out how many black Americans aren't down with the whole "gay marriage" meme, let alone the whole gay thing.
I cringed when Mrs. Garrett blurted out in an episode that she was a Democrat. A decent lady from that part of Wisconsin should’ve been a Republican.
Just found the episode on youtube! Eve Plumb was the nun! Great episode! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mzm_jRGsI-E&feature=youtube_gdata_player
I LOVE ALF and I LOVE Dubrovnik.
That's where the Military Plane carrying Ron Brown crashed during the Clinton Administration. Very dangerous, if you worked for Clinton that is.
Yugoslavia was a beautiful Country, and then the War came. I was glad we got to see it before that happened. I remember every Business had a picture of Tito hanging on the wall.
We were there last year ona cruise stop and it’s still BEAUTIFUL!! We also went to Kotor, Montenegro....FABULOUS...and I think I know what you mean by the mountains.
I think its universal. When I was in Okinawa in the late 60s my Ryukin girlfriend wanted to watch American sitcoms, I wanted to watch Samuria movies.
“Today the tomboy character would be a lesbian.”
...an agrieved lesbian fighting neandertal conservative republicans for all the benefits afforded a man and a woman in marriage and the right to adopt children with her short haired partner.
Lisa is on this season’s Survivor!
I remember the facts of life very well, all of the stupid sitcoms like Maude, Laverne and Shirley , Archie bunker, the Doctor and Lawyer and cop shows were all liberal and a front runner for what we have today which equals Obama and the homosexual agenda.
While the Doctor, lawyer and cop shows depicted the real people in a society hinting at socialism, people like Laverne and Shirley , Archie bunker hinted at the people of the masses too stupid to pour water out of a boot.
And Maude, the he man of the house, David Casidy the beautiful boy that may make a man forget that he was not a girl.
Yes i watched a little of all of those shows while turning the knob trying to find something fit to watch.
After realizing how worthless i was getting by doing that i quit watching TV and have not had it in my house for over 25 years.
Did i say worthless? just to be honest i have not noticed much difference there.
Meredith Baxter Birney, who played Elise Keaton, also came out as a lesbian. :::eyeroll:::
Mindy , who played Natalie, its not gay. She is currently single, has been engaged, has gay friends, and its looking for the man of her dreams. She has appeared on several shows saying that people think that she’s gay but she its absolutely straight.
Stop spreading lies.
Rewatch “Little House on the Prarie” if you want to see a show that has God intertwined in EVERY episode.
I remember. It ended with Jo’s realizing that she could have a real Christian life, probably as a married woman eventually, without being a nun/sister. Very sensible. Marriage is a religious vocataion, too.
