Not just governments but most major banks are close to being broke and working on the edge. Most of the largest Mega Banks have derivatives exposures that are 40-50-60 times their total assets, so what happens if Europe does collapse (which is fairly likely) causing them to loose just a modest percentage on those derivatives? ( http://ncrenegade.com/financial/fdic-statistics-read-em-and-weep-ann-barnhardt/ )

Personally I expect something much like the well I think that we are in for something like the collapse of Argentina ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yerKMQc7-w&feature=grec_index )but on a global scale.

When you add in the fact that there is a growing concern for social unrest regardless of which way the election goes, the next few months will be like walking a mine field.

Recent events show (Flash Mobs, OWS, etc) we have a large entitlement minded population that is violent prone and armed. I think that during a collapse you will see many small businesses wiped out by flash mob looting, and once started it will quickly spread to rape, robbery and murder for murder sake. You will see what I call ‘pocket pogroms’ and if you ain’t ‘Amish’ you better not be around when they come.

Many of these ‘yutes’ will think no more about killing you than most people think about stepping on a roach. That will be the test of many. Most preppers I know are Christian people and they will hesitate to do what they might have to do to stop the ‘yutes’. On the other hand the ‘yutes’ won’t think twice nor lose a minute of sleep, in fact they will smile and laugh about it.

Many of you who have read my post know I often refer to this quote from Star Trek Deep Space Nine:

“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Siege of AR-558 (#7.8)” (1998)

Quark: “Let me tell you something about Hew-mons, Nephew. They’re a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon. You don’t believe me? Look at those faces. Look in their eyes.”

Now yesterday I got couple complaints about using this quote mostly saying that my use of the quote from a fantasy TV program undermines the seriousness and the creditably of the subject.

I have always felt that you can find core truths in many places, sometimes even in very unusual places, but that doesn’t take away from their truth. This discussion makes me think of another ‘fantasy quote, one from John Wayne’s Movie ‘The Shootist’: “I won’t be wronged. I won’t be insulted. I won’t be laid a-hand on. I don’t do these things to other people, and I require the same from them.” Tell me what’s not true here? Would not the world as a whole be better if all tried to follow this simple code?

But back to my Star Trek quote, for those that don’t understand the point this quote is making how about if I ‘translate’ it:

John Doe: “Let me tell you something about people, Nephew. Most are wonderful and friendly as long as their bellies are full and their tv’s are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, hot showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty gangbanger. You don’t believe me? Look at those faces. Look in their eyes.”

So tell me is this not a true statement of what happens to people once placed under such stressful conditions? You would be surprised how many people don’t realize the transformations that can take place under such conditions. And because of their ignorance many won’t even live long learn.

If you want to learn what happens I suggest you read some of Selco’s firsthand experiences in Bosnia:

A Survival Q & A: Living Through SHTF In The Middle Of A War Zone

Clearly there’s a storm coming, as great as a hurricane and like you do when a hurricane comes your way you either prepare to weather it or you become a victim of it.

For those who are just starting or are old hands at prepping you may find my Preparedness Manual helpfull. You can download it at:

http://tomeaker.com/kart/Preparedness1j.pdf

NOTE! THIS IS A FREE DOWNLOAD. I DO NOT MAKE ONE CENT OFF MY PREPAREDNESS MANUAL!

For those of you who haven’t started already it’s time to prepare almost past time maybe. You needed to be stocking up on food guns, ammo, basic household supplies like soap, papergoods, cleaning supplies, good sturdy clothes including extra socks, underwear and extra shoes and boots, a extra couple changes of oil and filters for your car, tools, things you buy everyday start buying two and put one up.

As the LDS say “When the emergency is upon us the time for preparedness has past.”

Or as the bible says: A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.
NIV Proverbs 22:3

“There is no greater disaster than to underestimate danger.
Underestimation can be fatal.”

I am very glad you keep posting these articles. Please add me to your Ping list.

I find as a positive thing that most of my acquaintances are now more aware that a SHTF scenario is developing around us. Without trying to sound mystical it’s almost as though they can sense a major disturbance on the horizon. They don’t know what it is they are feeling, yet they know they are feeling something.

As a good neighbor of mind told me, it’s like you know there is a nasty thunderstorm coming even though you have bright blue skies and it’s a wonderful sunny day out and before you know it, the storm clouds are upon you and you are seeking shelter from the rain and keeping a lookout for that twister you know is lurking out there.

Small banks and the majority of credit unions are not into derivatives and high risk lending. These places will not tank. Money is safer in them. For now.

You have better friends than I. One has been smelling the storm clouds for four years but has done nothing about it. Others are clueless. Even the older folks who lived through the Depression refuse to see the storm coming.

Buffet divested half of his $16 billion holdings in municipal bond insurance.

That tells you something.

I said that they had been sensing the storm clouds, not that they were doing anything about it.

Mind you they probably are but we are way out in the rural areas, so it’s easier to prep and keep the effort hidden or disguised.

lol...because they know they can count on you when things fall apart! I’ve got family members who have told me that they don’t prep - and if things go bad, they’ll just come live with me! I despise that mentality.

“Many of these ‘yutes’ will think no more about killing you than most people think about stepping on a roach.”

True, but your average roach won’t be throwing high volumes of 7.62 NATO at them, either.

i manage a HUD Sec-8 senior property, many know its coming but either dont care or believe that they will be taken care of. Interestingly enough, the only ones that are truly concerned are my residents that lived through WW2 Germany

Who’s going to take care of them? The defunct government or their family who barely remembers they’re still alive? They’ll be left there just like the nursing home patients during Katrina. At least some can see the writing on the wall but can they do much in housing on a limited income?

That brings up another point. Many rely on a state or federal government “working” pay/retirement check. What’s to happen when one day those aren’t sent out? It’s pretty much monopoly money now and one day we won’t even have that.
