Word For The Day, Thursday, September 5, 2012 - cacology
dictionaries ad nauseam | 5 September 2012 | Thursday's sub

Posted on 09/06/2012 3:18:43 AM PDT by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

cacology \ka-KOL-uh-jee\, noun
Defectively produced speech; socially unacceptable diction.

Example sentences:
As to prose, I don't know Addison's from Johnson's; but I will try to mend my cacology.
-- Lord Byron, The Works and Letters of Lord Byron

Such cacology drives some people to distraction.
-- Linton Weeks, "R Grammar Gaffes Ruining the Language? Maybe Not", NPR

Etymology:
Cacology comes from the root caco- meaning "bad." This prefix occurs in loanwords from Greek. Similarly the suffix -logy is a combining form used in the names of sciences and bodies of knowledge.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Review Threads:

Review Thread One: Word For The Day, Thursday 11/14/02: Raffish (Be SURE to check out posts #92 and #111 on this thread!)
Review Thread Two: Word For The Day, Tuesday 1/14/03: Roister
Review Thread Three: Word For The Day, Tuesday 1/28/03: Obdurate

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!

Yes, those are delegates to a major party convention.

They are dumber than the people Jay Leno interviews on the “man on the street” bits.

This is a bizarre story: The DA in Houston is not running for reelection so the position was open for newcomers. At some point in the past few months the man who eventually won the dem nomination said in an interview that if he was a republican he would support his opponent. Apparently being civil at all is completely against the dem playbook so they kicked their OWN GUY off the ballot! Seriously - instead of just saying "next time, don't be so nice" they completely removed him so the republican would have easily won.

So yesterday every time the story aired locally, they said a REPUBLICAN Judge will decide if the democrat will win his suit to be put back on the ballot despite the efforts of the local dem party. All day...."republican judge"...... well that republican judge ruled that he COULD be on the ballot so today...he's a judge. Period. No mention of his party affiliation.

Oh wait....sorry - the local DA was defeated in the primary - she didn’t step down. Sorry about that

Don’t worry. If he (or she) commits a crime or gets into a scandal, he’ll magically be a “Republican” again.

Good thing we have Barack Obama to multiply this individual success.

If it wasn’t for the road there, the kid wouldn’t have built his business. So really, BO is to be commended for his success, not the kid.

The lying Cacology of "Me"shell's speech on Wednesday is summed up in a simple phrase, "Weez, down wiff the struggle"

Cacology just sounds like chicken talking since it's supposed to be what's said above I guess it makes sense...that would be the meaning not the chicken talk.

She mispronounces that word as “shtruggle”. All that money for the high-priced education and that’s what she got out of it.

I’m sure she didn’t pay much, if at all.....she is after all, the right color for assistance and I vaguely recall her admitting that fact somewhere in the past as a beneficiary of affirmative action.

hey, look at this. Not the article so much as the comments after it. this is the ABC news website, and the comments are more than half antiObams.
