Airplane Funniest Film Ever, Research Finds
The Telegraph ^ | 06 Sep 2012

Posted on 09/06/2012 7:27:33 PM PDT by nickcarraway

Airplane - which features classic one liners such as 'I am serious and don't call me Shirley' - came out top in research conducted by a panel of members of movie subscription service Lovefilm.

They calculated the precise number of 'laughs a minute' for the top 10 comedies chosen by Lovefilm members. The panel recorded the total number of times each film generated a laugh, before dividing it by the films' total length in minutes to calculate the precise 'laugh a minute' rating for each movie.

With a 'laugh A minute' score of three, Airplane beat nine rival comedies to top the list which has been created to mark The Hangover becoming available to stream on Lovefilm Instant.

The Las Vegas man-movie featuring the bachelor party to end all bachelor parties marked its arrival onto the Lovefilm Instant service by scoring a 'Laugh A Minute' rating of 2.4

Airplane! has a short scene with Jonathan Banks. That puts it ahead of a lot of other movies.

Greatest comedy ever, but that “Don’t call me Shirley” line ain’t even in the top 50 of that movie.

Ted Striker: My orders came through. My squadron ships out tomorrow. We're bombing the storage depots at Daiquiri at 1800 hours. We're coming in from the north, below their radar.

Elaine Dickinson: When will you be back?

Ted Striker: I can't tell you that. It's classified.

I love that movie. It's a classic.

It don’t get no better than Max Von Sydow in low budget humor.

Bob McKenzie: Fleshy-headed mutant. Are you friendly?

Doug McKenzie: No way, eh? Ra-... radiation has made... me an enemy of civilization.

Bob McKenzie: [into a comm unit] Alpha Base. This is Bob McKenzie. I have a fleshy-headed mutant in sector 16B.

[Bob shoots Doug with a toy foam launcher]

Doug McKenzie: Ahhh! Take off, you hoser.

Airplane is finally getting the recognition it deserves. I love thatt movie. I liked Dumb and Dumber, too (oh, maybe I shouldn’t have mentioned that). My husband claims he has a much higher developed sense of comedy, that’s why he hates all the movies that crack me up (There’s something about Mary, A Fish Called Wanda, any Monty Pythons).

Leslie Nielsen movies are two of the top three. Which figures. Wonderful comedic talent.

I didn’t think The Hangover was that funny. I’d have ranked Caddyshack, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein and Slapshot ahead of it, among others.

I’m not a Will Ferrell fan either but Anchorman was funny (”I’m Ron Burgundy?”). And as a Python fan it’s good to see Life of Brian there even if I do think Holy Grail was funnier.

Ah, subjectivity.

Funniest ever made? You got to be kidding!

Too me it would be Harold Lloyd in SAFETY LAST along with several others of his and:

IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD. The scene with Phil Silvers and Don Knotts, in the car,is priceless!

Right now I am watching some very funny old Mack sennett comedies.

AIRPLANE was funny, in a crude PORKY’S sort of way, same for BLAZING SADDLES.

Doug McKenzie: [to the rough-looking convicts in their jail cell] Chimp here does the killin’. I don’t like to kill. I’m the brains, eh? Like, we got over five billion dollars in our hideout, only some of the money’s marked, eh, so we’re not spendin’ it. We’s just waitin’.

Bald con: Youse guys like a smoke?

Doug McKenzie: No, eh? We want our lungs to be pink when they fry us. Hey, we told ‘em we didn’t want a lawyer. Chimp here probably just kill him anyway.

"Psst - Act! Act!"

Strange Brew is definitely in my top ten. The others are (in no particular order):

It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
Raising Arizona
Mystery Men
Ghostbusters

and these Laurel and Hardy films:
Brats
Blotto
Sons Of The Desert
Two Tars
