Where did the Republicans go? (Vanity)

Was wondering if some older and/or wiser Freeper could shed light on the following conundrum...

The Dems claim to be the party of Civil Rights, yet, when reminded of the Dems' role in the proliferation of slavery, the creation of Jim Crow laws, the enforcement of segregation, Bull Connor, George Wallace, and the opposition to civil rights measures in the 50's and 60's, they retort that those racist Dems moved over to the Republican party in the late 60's and early 70's, which is why Republicans are so racist nowadays.

My question is this: If the Dems took on the mantle of Civil Rights in the late 60's, how many pro-Civil Rights Republicans abandoned the GOP to join the Dems?

Or did the flight of the southern Dems to the GOP reflect the takeover of the Dems by the hard left?

Thoughts?

I am not aware of any racist Dems joining the Pubbies in the 60’s. There were some civil rights proponents who left the Dems and joined the Pubbies. The Dems did not take on the mantle of CR until Johnson made it a central part of his party’s platform. They vigorously opposed CR legislation up until then as we all know.
The Great Society was southern antebellum, allowing the Dems to keep the blacks segregated and control their vote.

What makes you think that happened? Racist trash like Robert KKK Byrd occupied a seat in the senate as a democRAT and the RAT party is racist to this day.

“Or did the flight of the southern Dems to the GOP reflect the takeover of the Dems by the hard left?”

Yes, I think that is the truth of it.

I’m not at all sure how the Ds have been able to slur the Rs as racist for all these years. Surely they did something, as the black vote was (deservedly) Republican for many years, I guess nearly 100 years.

It may have been LBJ vs. Goldwater. Goldwater was no racist, but he opposed the Civil Rights Act (or whatever it was called) as being too much an expansion of the Fed’l gov’t powers.

I think I have that right, but bless my heart I’m too young to remember....although I guess I did live through it!

George Wallace remained a Democrat and ran as presidential candidates even as late as 1976 for the 3rd or 4th time.

I suspect most former "Dixicrats" remained in the Democrat party in the 60s and beyond. Al Gore Sr. and Robert Bryd come to mind.

My thought is that you are either joking or you lack any knowledge of recent history. Your premise is WRONG. Go back to school and read

That’s a myth that the dems concocted to lay their racist baggage off on Republicans. It can be proved false by looking at the number of Dem segregationists that continued to get elected to Governorships of southern states as well as Senators from the south.

And the most prominent ‘Dixiecrat’ was Strom Thurmond to change over to the Republicans, and he ran as the presidential candidate for the States’ Rights Party in 1948. Thurmond won a few Southern states, but it was not enough to get Dewey elected.

the dems never supported civil rights. it was about every pub that supported it. whether it was Lincoln, US Grant, and all repubs since.

you will have to look through history. Woodrow Wilson was one of the most racists ever in office. he segregated the bathrooms and water fountains in DC. Prez Harding (R) removed the restrictions.

Eisenhower sent troups to allow blacks into public schools, no rat in sight.

JFK couldn’t support civil rights in ‘56 cuz he thought it would destroy his chances for prez in ‘60. the old naacp were devout pubs, because the dems down south were wearing white hoods, burning crosses and lynching blacks.

The civil rights legislation would not have passed in 1964, except for pub support. the great senator robert byrd (rat) was a kkk member.

the KKK was totally a rat organization. they lynched blacks. prove me wrong.

the problem goes to a basic fact. some people want to enslave you, and some want to make you free.

rats are the slave party and have always been. that is history.
the original pub party gives you an equal chance to succeed or fail.

work for someone, or work for yourself. there is no handout, just equal opportunity.

rats do not believe that because they are marxists. and it becomes an issue of power. it is not what is best for the people, but what will keep you in power. yea, the rinos believe that today.

to enslave people, you make them dependent on you. if they are dependent on you, they will vote for you.

thus gives you the relaxation in immigration laws, and every other subject. get as many dependents as you can to support you so that you can maintain power.

rats want to maintain power. they will do it through any means possible. that is why they want so many people on food stamps. then you owe the government. then you will vote for the hand that feeds you.

therefore, you are enslaved.

same tactics, different venue, but you are still a slave to the state.

that’s what the rats support. done it since before the civil war, and will do it forever.

hell, the said MLK jr. was a pub, maybe not, but it was the kennedy’s that had the fbi after him, monitoring him.

Who brings up the race card everytime? a rat.

can’t have a rational discussion with a rat until he calls you a racist.

although the demorat party has been and always will be the most bigoted, rascist party on the face of the earth.

hell, these aholes on these “occuppy” movements are the most anti-semetic people that you have ever heard in my life since hitler.

you don’t have to believe me, it is all over the web.

who are liars? listen to the dnc vote to put god and jerusalem back into their little -platform. guess what? it was obvious that there was no 2/3 majority by the vote to get them in

that was so obvious that it was not by a 2/3 majority, that was done to cover their exposed backside.

I will privately post you and give you all the info you need if you want to know about the history of rascism in America. the rats were wearing hoods, and lynching. the pubs were defending the rights of blacks.

makes me sick when is see the likes of jesse jackson, al sharpton, et. al. who are not “revs’ by any standard, supporting abortion, and killing of the enemy.

must needs to go to bed. can dump a lot of “facts on you later”.

blessings bobo

Two points:

When the Civil Rights Bill went through the Senate, it was filibustered by three members.

William Fulbright - D
Al Gore, Sr - D
Robert Byrd - D

All three remained Democrats their entire lives.

The other point - yes, I’m sure some southerners DID switch parties. But don’t forget that Democrats Clinton and Carter carried many southern states when they were elected; does that mean these former racist states were suddenly enlightened?

I didn’t misread or mis understand your post. If you knew your recent (i.e. modern) history you would know that the great majority of the folks leaving one party and joining the other has been from dens to repubs....the only GOP that have gone the other way (for forty or so years) have been folks like Charlie Christ. Many former dems have gone with the repubs (Southern and other wise) because just like Artur Davis and Ronald Reagan they found that their believes and values were consistent with the republican party. This is what the history shows. The dems have aways tried to steal anything that they think will help them out. The Great Society bills were passed with the help of repubs (unfortunately) and the left stole it.

The Democrat party took a different tact with respect to race after LBJ took up the issue of CR. Democrats embraced CR, but not as a means to ensure people of color were afforded equality, but as a means of control over people of color. The Democrats have used CR as a way to enslave people of color as benefactors of government entitlement.
