The James Bond Chronicles: Dalton, Davi Wasted in 'Licence to Kill'
Big Hollywood ^

Posted on 09/08/2012 7:39:50 PM PDT by Perdogg

Somewhere, somehow, something went very wrong with the second and final James Bond entry for Timothy Dalton.

It certainly isn’t his fault, as he did the best he could. Some sources point to the fact that there was a writer’s strike on that affected the script. That would explain a lot, but not all.

This movie had Flemingesque potential. First of all, this movie is essentially the novel "The Man With the Golden Gun". In fact, Felix Sanchez shares initials with Francisco Scaramanga (FS) and the sub-plot is taken directly from the novel where Scaramanga hires Bond to be his bodyguard. This suffers the same lack of polished credibility the novel lacked. Why would Sanchez risk his operation in hiring Bond? Maybe, according to Kingsley Amis in his review of Golden Gun post-Fleming for Jonathan Cape, perhaps Scaramanga was sexually attracted to Bond.

Other elements from Fleming's novel include "Casino Royale" when Bond tries to kill Sanchez - the novel describes how Bond earned half of his 00 and "The Hilbrande Rarity" with Milton Krest, and "Live and Let Die" at the worm and bait shop. That is where it ends.

The problem with this movie is that this was Cubby's answer to "Lethal Weapon II" where Bond becomes a Manic-depressive and loses his sense of responsibility. Bad dialogue was also a part this one, "Is there a law against what they did to Della" asks Bond, why yes there is and it is called murder. Here is a good analysis of the movie.

I did not like the phony country although it was clear it was Panama. I thought Wayne Newton was good in the movie. The soundtrack by the late Michael Kamen was a patch job, John Barry out on medical leave, or maybe just under appreciated by the Brocolies, even the title song was a last minute deal that Gladys Knight was not even in the credits. Bond girls were good enough. This movie suffered the same problem that "Octopussy" suffered - lack of control of Dalton.

Could have been better...much better. Unfortunately, Dalton was no more because of the Thunderball affair 30 years earlier, a lawsuit based on the Thunderball issue prevented his third movie.

The problem with "You Only Live Twice" was Connery's obvious boredom

More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Battle_for_Bond

As a result, McClory tried to ink a deal with Sony for a TV series claiming he had rights to the “James Bond” Franchise. This ended up in court between UA and Sony and tied up the movie franchise until 1994 when a judge tossed the case by McClory and Sony.

James Bond came on the seen when I was in high school, early 60s. I was a really big fan.
I am now reliving it as my G-Sat here in the Philippines is
running all of the Bond movies.
I just finished watching Octopussy. Many more will be on tonight.
Just this week I have seen “The Man With the Golden Gun”., Goldfinger, and “You Only Live Twice”.

I had a small part in that film. I played “Squishy”, the guy with the sweaty feet.

I thought of it as shades of “Miami Vice”, and I was a MV fan. Still, the review does point up the flaws in this film (and it does, oddly, not quite feel like a JB film, and it is missing John Barry’s touch). I had been a frequent moviegoer to see the JB films (at least since ‘81 with FYEO), but this would be the first film in 8 years that I never saw in the theater (and it would be 8 years from TLD until GE that I would see the next one).

It’s a damn shame they got mired in that lawsuit and cost us at least 2, perhaps 3, more films with Dalton in the process. He certainly deserved better (and after seeing his 2 successors, so did we). I personally think Robert Davi was the last “great” male villain to date (the rest have been largely forgettable... so much so, I don’t even remember who the villain was in “Quantum”). A little interesting thing I noticed was that Davi’s fellow FBI agent by the same name in “Die Hard”, Grand Bush, was also in LTK (although is it just me, or would his name have made a fine femme fatale ?). ;-)

The two main women, Carey Lowell and Talisa Soto, were quite lovely (although I like Carey with longer hair, especially when she wore the wig). I did find it hard to take Priscilla Barnes seriously, half expecting John Ritter (her “Three’s Company” co-star) to come flying into the scene. It was nice to see David Hedison again playing Felix Leiter, but the problem is that he was too old to be in the role (he is the same age as Roger Moore), for someone supposedly at or around Bond’s age. Too bad it was a different production company, but I rather liked Bernie Casey’s Leiter in NSNA, the first “Black” Leiter, but done in such a way that it didn’t feel PC, and he had good chemistry with Connery.

It did help that it had good supporting players, from Frank McRae, Anthony Zerbe and a very young Benicio del Toro, and yes, Wayne Newton probably gave his best performance ever in this film... bless his heart.

Ultimately, though, as was pointed out, the script probably could’ve been improved and the kinks worked out here and there, but I’d still give it 3 out of 4 stars.

Yes, I know. I’m glad we weren’t saddled with two more Pirs Bonbons farces. The insufferable smugness broke the Rog Moore scale something fierce, and to the point of near-complete caricature.

Truck chase was a new twist and good debut for Benecio Del Toro. Not in my top 15 bond list.

After the franchise signed on Dalton as Bond I really thought they had finally found the right guy. I was very surprised he lasted only two movies. I couldn’t make sense of it at the time. I think Craig makes a good Bond, and I hope he makes a pile of Bond movies, as long as the producers don’t go back to the comic book scripts they gave Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan. By the way, who’s the head honcho these days now that Cubby is gone?

I remember seeing this flick on a date...ah, the 80’s...grand bush and all that.

This was the best of Dalton's two 007 pics IMO. Carey Lowell looked GREAT. I enjoyed seeing Q out in the field in an extended role.

Robert Davi - Republican. Italian. Nothing else needed to say.

Wayne Newton DID give his best performance ever in this film.

Nice call on the Bernie Casey Leiter. NSNA is a very enjoyable film.

I love LTK, one of my favorites. I can’t think of any element in it that I didn’t like.

The planned third Dalton movie (rumored “Property of Lady”) I read would have featured a fembot (...), so perhaps it was good it wasn’t made. I wish he’d have done Goldeneye though.

Starting with OHMSS ? He was a bit young, but he probably could’ve pulled it off. Whether he’d have wanted to play the role for 20-25 years is another story.

Supposedly. I read it somewhere.

“He was a bit young, but he probably could’ve pulled it off.”

I agree.

“Whether he’d have wanted to play the role for 20-25 years is another story.”

He could have done that too.

Yep but he was a unknown Moore got the job because of him in the tv series “The Saint” already was a kinda sex symbol..
Dalton only got it because Brosnans show “Remington Steele” was being cancelled and Cubby said they are looking at Brosnan to do the next Bond movies.

All the publicity ABC decided to make another season of Remington Steele which bombed..The minute Brosnan was available they dumped Dalton..
BTW i like him as Bond they took Bond in a different direction..

Now if you wanna know why they picked Craig watch Layer Cake, while watching movie with wifey i said “Honey thats the next JB”..
