Woman Finds Renoir Original at Flea Market
Newsre.com ^ | September 8, 2012 | Mark Russell

Posted on 09/09/2012 7:16:58 AM PDT by Daffynition

(Newser) – The flea market box lot was less than $50, and the buyer picked it up mostly for the Paul Bunyan doll it contained. But it turns out the box lot also contained an original painting by Renoir that could fetch up to $100,000 in an auction at the end of the month, reports the New York Times. The 5.5-inch-by-9-inch painting of the Seine riverside is believed to be Renoir's Paysage Bords de Seine. It was bought from a French gallery in 1925 and later sold to a Maryland collector, but art historians aren't sure when or how it disappeared.

Not one of his better ones, from the looks of the photo! LOL!

I do pretty well at flea markets. I got a Martin Guitar for $75.00, and a Pre CBS Fender (basket case) for $35.00. I plan on reconditioning the Fender. It is, what you would call, a “project”.

Best thing I ever found at a tag sale was a 2-cup Pyrex measuring cup for 25¢...which I was in need off, at the time. :)

So do we believe this story—or is it a way to get stolen goods back circulated into the market?

I know from experience that people who are REALLY REALLY stupid and think they know everything are sometimes put in charge of liquidating an estate.

There was another story a couple of months ago of some lady finding some other major artwork at a flea market in NC. There was a label on the back saying the art came from NC State. So, if you find any artwork that belonged to a government institution, it may be valuable.

Technically speaking Seurat was a pointillist, which is generally regarded as a post-impressionist movement ;-)

“Not one of his better ones, from the looks of the photo”

Then you don’t understand art, and what a masterpiece it is. Therefore you should not be commenting on it.

(just kidding, this is the reaction from the ‘art community’ when a normal taxpayer asks why the government should have to shell out many millions per year to pay for these clowns)

“... is it a way to get stolen good back circulated into the market?”

I thought if it was definitely stolen, the painting (or whatever).. would be confiscated? I know that occurred with some coins just recently. If the original painting was sold to someone in Maryland and there is no police report... perhaps it was just lost in an estate sale?

We've has some stories of a local mob-connected guy who isn't spilling any info he may have on the huge Eliz. Gardner 1990 heist.

Maybe I should watch out if they are having a yard sale over that way. ;)

Sounds to me like a piece that was quietly stolen from the museum that it was donated to and that it had a sticker from. (Helps to have the sticker for the authentication that would be required in order for it to fetch much in the market.)

With the ‘finder’ not being publicly identified that makes it a little more likely IMO she could be fencing it for someone.

Uh...thank you for clarifying your comment, as I am a great fan of Renoir and grew up in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts which houses a fine collection of his and other Impressionist Artists.

And I have always rebelled against the “Art Community” LOL. That’s why I am a FReeper! :-D

Tricky, tricky stuff. I didn’t even think about that! It does make sense in a way.. if she is questioned, she can say she purchased it in a mixed bag of stuff. Chances are that sales of this nature don’t keep detailed records of every wooden spoon, book, picture that it sells. You’re a smart cookie, Lurker!

Where's the diversity in that painting? It's a hate painting.

I do see Michelle Obama's butt was fashionable at that time though.

Did you ever seen the Steven Sondheim show, SUMDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE? It’s about the artist George Seraut who painted this? At the end of Act 1 the cast recreates this scene on the stage.. It is BRILLIANT!

Best thing I ever found at a flea market? FIVE, count 'em, FIVE W87 fully functional MIRV nuclear weapons. They were only $0.75 each (talked the guy down from $2.00 apiece)... but *I* had to transport them. Here's a friend and I loading them on my transport pallet. Right now they are in my gun locker. You see, when *I* say Second Amendment, I MEAN IT.

You try a home invasion in my house. Go ahead. See what happens.
