I was the first boy to take “home ec” in my high school. I signed up simply to get access to the industrial sewing machines. Made a backpack, down vest, etc.

Took a lot of razzing. “You want to be the only guy in a class with all those girls?” Suddenly a thoughtful look would come over their faces.

Half a dozen guys signed up next semester.

Male nannies are a big thing with the celebrity elite, so I hear. They’re called mannies.

Would I hire one? Probably safe enough since I only have daughters. (sarc intended)

Ha! I was in the first group of boys in my middle school to take home ec. The class was focused exclusively on cooking. I think we all did it so we could eat more during school.

Considering that woman are going into all the traditional male professions, I think some men are doing this to spite the ladies. Although could you imagine being an 18 year old male with all those woman? That might just be called paradise.

"I don't think it should be thought of as unusual if a man wants to work in the childcare profession," he told ABC News in a statement. "Men can bring a different dimension to childcare and I think it is really important that even the youngest children have strong male role models."

I suppose this is either a posed picture to show off the male student, or they hid the ugly nanny behind him. why else would he be in the front row?

This may not be a bad thing.

My brother took care of me sometimes, when I was an infant and he was 17. He eventually got a masters in public health and became a skilled nursing facility administrator, providing care-giving for the elderly. One of his best proteges in the field was a male nurse who moved into nursing administration.

Also, this brings to mind the Russian royal family, who had a male nurse for their hemophiliac son. He was a devoted caregiver right up to dying with his patient, wasn’t he?

I would certainly prefer that to the obnoxious appellation "manny" that seems to be gaining usage in some circles...
