On October 19, 2001, I flew to Chicago and rented a car. At the rental car lot, I noticed that the license plates on the cars were not just from Illinois, but from states throughout the Union—most likely because airline passengers stranded by the 9/11 terrorist attacks used rental cars to reach their final destinations.

I was in grad school. I was preparing for my morning class when a relative called and asked if I was watching the news on TV. I turned-on the TV and saw live video feeds of the WTC with one tower with smoke billowing from it. Just as the reporters were talking about a plane having struck the tower,I watched a second airliner aim for the other tower and fly into it. I will never forget that horrific image of an airliner being purposely flown into the second tower. I will never be able to forget the images of the towers collapsing.

I over-expressed my feelings in post 42 (and then self-reported myself, thanks mod). Still so mad and sad that I can’t see. I’ll just leave with this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5vwMmNYm5I

Watch this moving tribute to the heroes of 9/11 composed by a man who lived through it:

http://www.frugalsites.net/911/attack/

(music by Enya)

Every American should watch this amazing video.

Also from the page, view the 'Pentagon Tribute Page', 'Anatomy Of The Attack' and 'Explanation Of Page'. Don't miss the heartbreaking 'That Day', In Author's Own Words.

It is the most viewed video of all, and is now in the Smithsonian.

I was at work on a construction site in Freehold NJ. A co-worker hit me on my Nextel radio and said “A plane just hit The Trade Center’’. Years prior to 9/11 I'd worked in Manhattan in the construction industry and used to commute in on the Path trains to the South Tower. On a clear day and a day so clear with such a brilliant blue sky as there was that morning(never before or since have I ever seen such a sky) you could see The World Trade Center towers for miles on any point on the compass. So when my friend told me a plane had hit them I remember thinking “That's dumb, who the heck can't see those two things?’’. One of my younger brothers saw the whole attack from across the river in Jersey City. He saw people jumping. “Like wax dripping from a candle’’ he said. He still has nightmares. My youngest brother lives in on the Lower East side, he's a chef. Friends of his were killed in The Sky Box Cafe in the South Tower. Some of them he had trained to be sous chefs a year earlier. They were developmentally-challenged adults trained in a partnership with with the State of New York, the Port Authority and The New York School of Culinary Arts. He say's sometimes at night he ''see's their faces'' They're calling to me to help them and I can't''. My father lost a friend, a retired architect who had been in Windows On The World that morning seeing his broker. Called his wife to say good-bye and then went out the window. I'll never forget 9/11. And I'll NEVER forgive the barbarians who bought this horror to our country.

I was finally at that time in our family life when the kids were in high school and would get themselves up and ready for school. I had been awake for awhile listening to them chatter and visit about their upcoming day. I had the radio on and the morning show duo were bantering about the Mexican Presidente being in the U.S. and President Bush working on an agreement about illegal immigration.

Suddenly, one of the two said, "Wait a minute ... sorry to interrupt but there is something going on in NYC. It appears a small plane may have flown into the WTC tower. We are going to take a break and see if we can find out more and be right back with you."

I quickly turned on the TV. And started what ended up being a three day stay-awake watching TV and going to work. One of the kids came in to see what was going on and as we sat in disbelief we watched as the second plane flew into the tower.

The kids went to school. I did have to go into a job at a florist shop (we were in TX) for a few hours. By 1:00 p.m. CST we started getting calls for flowers to be sent to people locally and other parts of the country related to the WTC coming down ... mostly 'I am thinking about you' and a few 'Sympathy' arrangements. It was so surreal.

I think we just kept watching it over and over because we were trying to understand it and believe it could have happened. That human being could do such an evil act.

driving to work, early here on the West coast.....listening to fm radio, classic rock, and the announcers starting talking about this weird thing that just happened with a plane crashing into the Trade Towers....I imagined a tiny little piper cub...

when I got to work, all the tvs in the hospital were tuned in....

it was just absolutely unbelievable...before our eyes....those towers collapsing just like that....

that evening, I didn't want to upset my dtrs too much so we went to the fair as planned...husband was in Africa at the time....when I got home, the tv was one for 24 straight hours as I watched and watched and rewatched it again...

ironically, tonight I was also at the fair...

That morning we were (ahem) “training” new Chief Petty Officers at a military installation. A fellow Chief grabbed me and we went into the main room of the community center where the big screen was at. The first plane had hit. She asked me what I thought had happened, and I said “terrorism” and minutes later the next plane hit. I said “Osama Bin Laden”. Shortly after that, someone on Fox said the same thing. It was not rocket science to me. I had been in Somalia in the early 90’s where I became aware of his (OBL’s) personal involvement in funding fighters there and had been following his rhetoric since.

I called my wife and told her not to let our daughter go to school that day. She came to the Navy housing area, where we stayed at the Navy Lodge for a few days. I did that mainly so I could see them and be sure they were safe, in case we were restricted to base or had to leave suddenly. I didn’t want to be to far from them at a time like that.

That day, I was filled with rage and hatred for these freaks of nature. I didn’t succeed in holding back the tears for the benefit of my daughter. I tried, but our fellow Americans were so victimized by these animals. They didn’t have a fighting chance and that just sucks. To this day I realize that I’m not fit to be president. I just know I would’ve nuked a list of countries that day. I still wish our response would’ve been harsher than it was. Three buildings and airliners full of people along with one lone aircraft should have resulted in at least as many countries utterly destroyed. More is owed. It’s clear these punks have learned nothing since then. The day will come when we will get real justice for what they did. They are begging for it, still today, with the death of an American consulate worker in Benghazi.

I’m retired now, but my daughter has volunteered to lend a hand in stoppng these bastards. I wish I could say what she does for us. Let’s just say she’ll know them better than they know each other.

Sorry, I did not make clear what my last post was about President Bush. This was the topic on talk radio the morning of 9/11/01. It was a great concern among many that President Bush was talking illegal immigration.
This topic was interrupted by the WTC news ... and I do not believe the topic was ever brought up again in the Bush Admin.

Do you know the story of Mohammed Atta's suitcase? Here is a fresh recounting, as I discover.

"It was like opening a casket", the article says, in agreement with what I recall from earlier accounts.

I was at work in the school district office when my son called from his office in Connecticut to tell me about the first plane flying into WTC. I was telling him about a long ago crash into the Empire State Building, when I heard everyone in his office begin to scream. They had seen the second crash.

I spent the rest of the day working on related issues that faced our school. Our town was chosen to receive a large number of burn victims from the towers. Their families would be visiting, and children would need to be welcomed into the school system.

When I got home and tuned in coverage, reporter after reporter covered the nurses at emergency facilities, waiting for wounded who never arrived. The burn victims, families and children never arrived in our town, either.

There were 32 cars abandoned at my son’s train stop—all owned by commuters who lost their lives that day.

On the first anniversary, I visited the site and St. Paul’s Church. The iron fences that surrounded the church were filled with tributes to the murdered ones, along with police caps and badges from cities all over the country, including my own. The white pews had been well-scuffed by the boots of sleeping firemen. It was decided not to repaint them in honor of those responders. Banners were displayed from the ceiling, sent by children from all over the world. They were so touching, and the scene behind the church so devastating, that I sat down in one of those white pews and sobbed. The pews are now gone.

Re: “fresh recounting”, the linked article is dated 9/11/2002, which I misread as 9/11/2012 for some reason. So I guess this was original reportage, as this was a slow developing story, under the circumstances.

I was living in New Zealand. My husband went to bed about a half hour before me. I wasn’t quite ready and stayed up to do a last check of my favorite forums. I caught a post about the first tower being hit. I immediately turned on the tv. It took a while for it to register, seeing the 2nd tower hit, and being in shock, but since my husband and I are both pilots and they shut down all the air space, I knew it was time to wake him up. I remember being glued to the tv and crying. I don’t think Sky TV filtered coverage as much as the U.S. did. There was a knock on our apartment door. It was our cleaning woman and I realized I’d lost 3 days. She took one look at me and said she was sorry and she’d come back later. I later found out my parents were on a Grand Canyon bus tour with a large group from Cantor Fitzgerald. I think all my mother said about it was that it was very sad. For my mother to even say that spoke volumes.

A few months ago, I visited the Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas while waiting for my daughter to get out of class. There is a beam from the World Trade Center there. A guy was taking pictures of it and talking to his girl friend (I assume) about being one of the first responders. I really had to choke back the tears listening to him talk about it. I overwhelmingly wanted to do something socially inappropriate but didn’t want to intrude on his vacation, or potentially elopement to Vegas. I heavily misted and pretended to be observing the displays while he talked about it.

Every year this is so emotional for me. I’m a nurse, and I think, “what if I worked in NYC then?” Our gay, muslim (p)resident apologizes to muslims on this anniversary of horrific tragedy. Makes me want to puke.

Interesting story. Never heard about the suitcases left behind. I had heard rumors from the locals that Atta was seen in the bars/clubs at the Old Port in Portland days or weeks prior to his departure.

I also remember Michael Savage ranting about something where an FBI agent or some federal agent noticed something suspicious but his uppers told him to leave it alone because of fears of offending a minority. Problem is that the part of Maine he mentioned never made sense to me. I cannot recall the whole story. The only place I heard about that was from Savage’s radio show.

By the way this was just tweeted:

Images rarely, if ever, seen in the mainstream press (some of them graphic)
