Where were you on 9/11? (Vanity)

We were stationed at Camp Pendleton. I was in bed, and my husband had just gotten into the shower when my MIL in Boston called and told me what happened. I remember thinking she was kidding (she has a messed up sense of humor). I turned on the tv and hung up. When I saw it for myself for the first time, it was like all Hell broke loose. My husband’s Gunny called basically screaming at me to get him on the phone, my neighbor was pounding on my door, and I was hammering on the bathroom door to get hubby out of the shower. As my husband ran out the door half dressed, I had one thought. This is going to change my entire future. And it did. Not just as an American, but as a wife and mother.

The base went into lockdown. There was something terrifying about seeing the USMC react to the unknow on that day. Humvees in housing, guards at the DoD schools on base, cars being stopped and inspected, not being able to leave. I didn’t see my husband for days. He is Arty, and they kept them at the shop on standby. No one knew what was going to happen, and my neighbor and I kept all our kids in one house or the other and kept each other from going insane.
