Word For The Day, Thursday, September 13, 2012 - tu quoque
WSJ | 13 September 2012 | Thursday's sub

Posted on 09/13/2012 4:13:08 AM PDT by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

tu quoque \ˈtü-ˈkwō-kwē, ˈtyü-, -ˈkō-\ noun, interjection
you likewise: a retort made by a person accused of a crime implying that the accuser is also guilty of the same crime

Example sentence:
We found this quote through Weigel, who thinks he has effectively answered conservative criticism of the current administration with a tu quoque. But in contrast with the Bush State Department, neither the president nor Mrs. Clinton vigorously, or even limply, defended the right of free speech.
---James Taranto, Best of the Web, WSJ, 9/12/12

Etymology:
1671, from Latin, literally "thou also" (or, in modern slang, "so are you!"); an argument which consists in retorting accusations.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Review Threads:

Review Thread One: Word For The Day, Thursday 11/14/02: Raffish (Be SURE to check out posts #92 and #111 on this thread!)
Review Thread Two: Word For The Day, Tuesday 1/14/03: Roister
Review Thread Three: Word For The Day, Tuesday 1/28/03: Obdurate

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!

tu quoque

While the guys were sitting around the garage this word came up along with...(not to mention...well,... not to mention) from last night.

Guillum said he added several foot/pounds of tu quoque as well as over 20 ho respower to his re stored Hudson sedan.

Some times he is just tu coo coo.

Xshub has his meeting from now. I’m breakfasting poolside then I have a massage scheduled. He walked me thru the casino part. How weird. We’re staying at the four seasons which sits atop the Mandalay Bay. I need to get my bearings bc I’m exploring alone. I was taking pix with my phone and he was acting embarrassed of me! I said when am I ever going to see these people again?? It just looks so odd to me. I’d never choose this as a destination but it’s fun since I’ve never been. Soother didn’t pick up on my movie reference the other night. Lost In America with Albert Brooks and Julie something. Retire and plan to travel the country they stop in Vegas she gets sucked in and LOSES THE NEST EGG of life savings to the gambling tables. I told Xshub, I hope I don’t lose the nest egg !

Who gets Albert Brooks references?

Take $40 or $60 and go play some quarter slot machines. Try the ones with the real reels, not the video ones.

It’s cheaper than a massage and it might have a happy ending!

Guess you weren't born in 1985. It's the year we got married.

Have you ever seen Defending Your Life? It might be the best Albert Brooks movie ever.

Ha-ha! I corrected it to 28 and it went through wrong anyway. We’re on our 29th year now.

Wasn’t watching a lot of Albert Brooks movies in my high school years. Or ever. Are there even a lot of Albert Brooks movies?

It might be the best Albert Brooks movie ever.

It probably is. Not that that's saying much.

My wife has a copy of it. I've seen parts of it, but never sat through from beginning to ending.

We had finished grad school by then. That’s where we met. But we both started school when we were 4.

Thank you for the link. I was hoping it would explain when the phrase was first used. It is a good reminder that we are all sinners.

When they said
Bon Jovi was dead
Someone threw out the tu quoque
That Scott Baio was also not OK*.

*No celebrities from the 1980's were actually harmed.

Chachi, NO! Or how I think of him, Bob LaBlabla. A+ for you and here's another article about the guy who thinks he is always the smartest one in the room, and I don't mean Romney. As Rush says, show me the evidence that he is smart.
