Halftime: Nebraska 28, Arkansas State 3

BY Jon Nyatawa | POSTED IN Big Red Today

Nebraska’s efficient offensive attack, piling up most of its production on the ground, is back on track after two quarters of play against Arkansas State.

Quarterback Taylor Martinez has completed all eight of his passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns. He’s looked comfortable in the pocket. Credit his offensive line (for good protection) and receivers (for making tough catches and getting extra yards), too.

But the real reason for all NU’s success? The effectiveness of the ground game.

Nebraska’s run the ball 25 times (a couple QB scrambles included) and passed it just eight times. The Huskers are averaging 5.1 yards per carry. Sophomore Ameer Abdullah (17 carries for 81 yards) is doing most of the work, but Martinez displayed some fearlessness on his five rushes, gaining 40 yards.

Other notes…

>> Coach Bo Pelini was checked out by the team trainers on the sideline during the second quarter. He appeared to have his pulse taken. During his halftime interview, he said this to the sideline reporter: “I’m ok. I’m fine. I’m just not feeling real good.”

>> Kyler Reed finally found some space downfield. He got behind the linebackers for a 22-yard catch in the first quarter. Coming into the game, Reed’s longest grab was an 18-yarder in the back of the end zone.

>> Daimion Stafford’s delivered a couple replay-worthy hits, flying toward the football from his safety spot with the type of aggressiveness that seemed to be missing last week. He broke up a pass with a well-timed hit on receiver Carlos McCants. Crushed David Oku, too. Those shoulder-first tackles look great on highlights, just as long as he makes full contact.

>> The between-snap chess match between Pelini and Gus Malzahn is fun to watch. One guy sends in a substitute. Then the other guy responds. After every Arkansas State offensive play, it seems like you see several players (from both teams) sprinting on and off the field.

>> Pretty sure I saw Nebraska’s defense using signs to signal in the plays during Arkansas State’s final possession of the first half. The Red Wolves move fast normally. Two-minute drill is even faster, even though they surrendered pretty easily, willing to let the clock run out.

I thought I saw him trot off the field. He said he didn’t feel good. I hope he’s not having a heart attack.

Watching the game, they said several witnesses said they saw him leave in an ambulance, I hope they are just being careful.

I was just going to say if ULM pulled it out, that they would be in first place in the SEC.

The kid’s grown up the last two weeks, the most impressive thing about today’s game....no sacks. College Station and Knoxville aren’t easy places to go into to.

That run when he looked like he was going out of bounds then cut back and
got another 10+ yards. That strike he threw when he was running out of
bounds and should have thrown it out of bounds and got a first down.

Both were bloody phenomenal. Thank God for inventing the DVR.
