To put it bluntly, the powers that be could control what you can and cannot document on your wireless devices according to their own whims.

Given that the major technology companies are set to make wireless connectivity a major feature of the latest cameras, this development does not bode well for photographers and citizen journalists who are already experiencing a major crackdown on their first and fourth amendment rights.

Slightly opposite of technology developed by Bruce Wayne in "The Dark Knight" to pinpoint the Joker within Gotham City. That technology turned every cell phone into a monitoring device. This Current Obama initiative blocks cell phones from being a monitoring device.

Two sides of the coin. Both tyrannical. One is here now. One is coming.

Welcome to “The New Normal” where the FedGov and Corporations work hand-in-hand to limit the freedoms of the masses. We are being herded by both and we aren’t going like what’s at the end of the chute!

I always carry a non-phone digi camera with a nice optical zoom lense and a pretty good mic.

Might stop a few apple fanboys, but now that people have been forewarned...

If they can turn them off then they can turn them on. Saying they can turn them off is just an easier sell to the sheeple.

Putting your phone in "airplane mode" should take care of that issue, if it's ever implemented. Apple and other companies get a lot of patents that are never used. There's at least one legitimate purpose for that sort of thing, though, and that's disabling photos at military installations etc.

As to all the Apple IDs that were released, the idea that they came from an FBI computer's been debunked. It was a Florida software company instead:

Not inside a Faraday cage. They might become popular as a phone storage option... ;-)

Because this is an Apple patent, buy a phone with all the features you want as long as it is not an iPhone and you should be OK.

Um...no. The patent relates to location, but any manufacturer could implement (today) the ability to turn on the camera and/or microphone on a smartphone remotely. Everything is already controlled by onboard software.

They could even do it very sneakily, just a quick message to switch on recording, save the recording to local storage, then upload it later whenever you're actually making a call. That would work even if the conversation of interest happened in a bunker/SCIF etc.

It is only a patent, not an existing app/device! Patents are not necessarlily implimented in any future device. IPhones currently do not have this “feature”, nor is it inevitable that future devices will have it ever. And others like Andriod and Google will be hot on the trail if and when this “feature” becomes popular.

Of course this violates the First, Fourth, and Fifth Amendments, but not a single voice of objection from our worthless representatives.

They’ve had the ability to use built in diagnostic code to turn them ON without your knowledge for a while now. Easy flip side of that would be this...

I will not be shut down, at least not this way. Everyone I know uses their camera on their phone, except me. I have a very small camera that I carry with me all the time. I’ll be taking pictures of that event if I am close enough to see it.

The technology makes it possible for the firm, at the behest of government officials, to create a “geo fence” around any venue or event which is identified as a security priority or sensitive area.

If government officials didn't intend to be breaking the law, they would have nothing to fear from people recording their actions.
