Fans outraged after Lynyrd Skynard denounces Confederate flag

Now the band has suddenly decided to become political correct. Gary Rossington, the only original member, grovelled to CNN's Fredricka Whitfield. He says he doesn't want to offend anyone by using the Confederate flag. He said the band will no longer display the flag. Lynyrd Skynyrd "Sweet Home Alabama" in 1977. This was three months before the plane crash that killed three of the original members.

--SNIP--

The band released a new studio album just days ago ironically titled "Last of A Dying Breed." The band is preparing to go on tour to support their new album. However, there is a growing outrage among fans. Many say they have attended Lynyrd Skynyrd concerts for decades, but will never buy a ticket again. Twitter and Facebook have exploded with condemnation. Many are now calling the band a "fake," who just own the right's to the original band's name.

Lynyrd Skynyrd...to be honest, this version 2.0 of the band hasn’t had a 4-star hit since the original band was in the aircraft accident. They do a decent show, but there’s not much worth talking about.

Sweet Home Alabama
Play that dead band’s song
Turn the speakers up real loud
Play it all night long—Warren Zevon

Not putting up the Confederate flag anymore? It’s part of history. I have the L.S. box set. Maybe time to sell it. Yikes. (And I’m a Yank from Mass.: “That’s the cowboys and the hippies and the rebels and the Yanks, you just go and lay your hand on a Pittsburgh steeler fan and I think you’re gonna finally understand.”—Charlie Daniels band.)

I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd at the Spectrum in Philly not long before the plane crash. That was a great band. These new guys are a bunch of leeches profiting off the name. It’s a shame.

I’m so happy to see so many Zevon fans here. I think Gary Rossington has just lost of third of their ticket sales for this tour. Too bad. I saw the old version 1.8x of Lynrd Skynrd in 1989 or so. They played a good show.

the band (and RV's bros) have capitalized on Ronnie, Ed & Steves talents all these years - leeches, the lot...

Though this move is surprising given they capitalized on that flag as well in their marketing

I followed Skynyrd ver 1.0 and Rossington-Collins in my youth and enjoyed the Rossington/Thomason/Medlocke guitar line-up in ver. 2.0.

Rossington can play the hell out of his Les Paul but i’ve not once been impressed with his intellect.

His mind is either addled by his past excesses or he’s remained uneducated.

But to his credit he’s managed to make a fortune off the Skynyrd brand.

Well done to Skynyrd’s management.

This was the last hurdle to getting urban audiences to abandon hip hop and R&B and head out to Skynyrd shows.

Good for you. I never saw either version, but I remember when they died, like it was yesterday. I’ve never trusted their 2.0 version, and if they’ve decided to insult their fan base, that’s fine - I won’t have to hear their name anymore when it comes to concert advertising.

-— Great bands only live forever if they hang it up BEFORE they jump the shark and are just playing fairgrounds. -—

Depends if they’re just phoning it in. For some reason, the public has a short attention span for popular music acts. Not many stay at the top for longer than 15 years. In rock, I can only think of U2, Elton John, Aerosmith, and Billy Joel.

If they’re in the “Puppet Show and Spinal Tap” stage of their careers, still writing songs, and still putting on a good show, I’m all for it.

I’ve enjoyed fairground shows by Eddie Money, Charlie Daniels, Marshall Tucker, Pointer Sisters, and War, among others. Intimate setting, great performances, and the price was right.

I’m an illustrator and plan on illustrating until I drop. I don’t have to fear a “fairground” stage of my career. Doesn’t seem fair that musicians have to.

Damn! Beat me by a few minutes.

When I was stationed in Germany, I did go home with a waitress, but she wasn't with the Russians.

Here's my offering of great Zevon lyrics:

Carmelita, hold me tighter
I think I'm sinking down
And I'm all strung out on heroin
On the outskirts of town

Well, I'm sittin' here playing solitaire
With my pearl-handled deck
The county won't give me no more methadone
And they cut off your welfare check

Carmelita hold me tighter
I think I'm sinking down
And I'm all strung out on heroin
On the outskirts of town

With the one who parked the cars
And the fat one from the swimming pool
They were swaying arm in arm

She’s gone with the hula hula boys
And she don’t care about me

Ahina ini Manu amu kapawana....
