I saw it this evening. I liked some of the characters--Rearden, d'Anconia, for the good guys--the weasels like James Taggart, Kip Chalmers, and Lillian Rearden came across like I expected them. I did not particularly care for Samantha Mathis as Dagny--Mathis hasn't aged well, and made Dagny look much older than I envisioned her from the book.

There's a lot going on in Act II, including a lot of dynamic scenes. The train wreck in the Taggart Tunnel was probably the best scene; the "Money Speech" by Francisco was decidedly abridged, and came across better in the book, but was passable. There were some scenes that made me chuckle, including protesters that looked remarkably like OWS-era!

All in all, the movie will sit best with those who've read the book, and understand the background. Still, pretty well done, and a good time.

Saw it yesterday—much better than the first AS. I was particularly impressed by the actress who played Dagny. I always had DT pictured as a hard, statue-like Sharon Stone type, but this one has a softer, rounded face with a little Irish nose. And she makes it work, a more vulnerable and emotional Dagny and I wonder if AR would approve...but who cares? She’s *great.*

One of the problems I had with the first AS was that the characters seemed much younger than I imagined them, like shallow college kids. And the first Dagny was a wooden-headed sorority girl. But I guess younger is always hotter.

[Night Hides Not]

I saw it yesterday afternoon. There were two others in the audience, but it was 3 o'clock on a Friday afternoon, and most of the sales are from Bollywood movies.

I'll admit my bias, but I loved the movie. Two favorite scenes: Francisco at James' wedding, and Dagny filling up the gas tank ($840!!!).

I'll probably go see it several more times.

I didn’t see Part I yet. But I see that Samantha Mathis and Esai Morales are in Part II. I like both of them. (Part I on DVD should arrive from Amazon on Monday and we’ll watch it before seeing this one.)

Part 2 is better. They had a much bigger budget.

Saw it tonight in SF. Trailers before the movie: Zero Dark Thirty, Promised Land, Hitchcock, Parker.

Theater was in a multiplex and was about 1/4 to 1/3 full for a late afternoon showing.

Complete silence from the audience during the trailers, except maybe for “Parker.”

I liked (at least visually) the original casting of Dagny, Rearden and Francisco in the first movie. The new Dagny (Mathis) is a haggard Taggart, but I guess trying to run a railroad with the gov’t breathing down your neck has to have that effect. Rearden (Beghe) was mmmm eh OK I guess. Francisco (Morales) was too old and his lines a bit too glib, he didn’t make eye contact but always seemed to be looking off to the side. I liked the first Francisco (Jsu Garcia) better.

The writing was excellent and I was blown away by how well they edited and compressed some scenes without sacrificing the continuity of the story at all.

* Beginning and ending the story with the journey/chase scene (Dagny running after Quentin Daniels) to Galt’s Gulch
* Engineer Allen’s brief roadside synopsis of what went wrong in Starnesville and what became of the 20th Century Motor Corporation (nicely done)
* Quentin Daniels in his lab with the miracle engine

I enjoyed Robert Picardo as Stadler. He has a copyright on brilliant scientists who don’t suffer fools gladly.

I enjoyed part II very much. There were a dozen or so I think there this Saturday afternoon.

The fillup scene evoked a few chuckles. I really liked Henry Rearden at the trial too.

I think this more mature cast works better than the ones in the first as well. Part I is still good watching.

Seeing Lyta (Pat Tallman) Alexander was nice even though her screen time was brief.

Easi Morales in this incarnation of Francisco struck me as very well done.

I doubt too many people who hadn’t read the book went to the limited release of the first movie.

I don’t mind the actor changes. Low budget means you can’t lock them into a contract.

It will be interesting to watch the triliogy they make on DVD with different actors but it’s the story I’m interested in.
