Whites falling behind in smartphone usage, Nielsen study shows

After all the hoopla, the Apple’s iPhone debut on Friday more than lived up to expectations, with analysts estimating as many as 10 million sales by tomorrow and more than 130 million by the end of the year.. But there is a surprising quirk in the numbers. More than half of American mobile subscribers — 55.5 percent — are now owners of smartphones of all types, but for white people, the numbers make up just 45 percent, the lowest of any ethnic group, new findings from Nielsen show. Sixty-six percent of Asians, 56 percent of Hispanics and 55 percent of African-Americans use smartphones to check e-mail, play games and surf the Web.

I have no idea what I would do with a Smart phone.
I guess I am a retired techie.
I spent my life in radio electronics, and was the first cellphone agent in my Tennessee county, back when they were the new gizmos.
Now, I have a basic Nokia phone that I bought in Slovakia, around 2007, but still ignorant of all the features. I have to have my new Philippine wife, as of tomorrow, do the advanced functions for me.
I am happy just to have it to send or receive a short text, such as messaging my pedicab driver to pick up a case of San Miguel (beer) from the distributor ;)

Right, we have 2 phones. If we each get a smart phone they tack on an extra $30 a month EACH. NO THANKS.

I will wait until they require that I have them. Seems like White people are the only ones smart enough to know that an extra #360 to $720 is better spent practically anywhere else.

I depend on my Android. Does everything I need a computer for, run an internet business from it, movies, music... It’s my only media device. Live on a boat, like things simple, don’t like too much crap in my life... No room! ;^)

I have had a teensy weensy Nokia Tracphone thing that cost about twelve bucks three years ago. Got it for emergencies like getting stranded in a dead car in the middle of nowhere. Have never used it even once and don’t even know the number offhand. That’s how much I care.

When you get a phone, they run your credit. They are giving you a phone and selling you a two year plan. The phone is worth a couple hundred dollars.

Your credit report leads to all matter of info. including your race.

I’m not sure how smart it is to make use of an inferior system with a tiny screen and tiny keyboard if one has a desktop, or laptop with far more capability and ease of use.

Smart phones would be fine for someone on the go extensively, or who does not have any of the larger and more powerful systems.

Just a good basic cell phone would meet the needs of most with access to larger computers. I have a semi-smart phone I can use to access the web for weather and such if needed, but wouldn’t waste time with it when I have access to better systems.

I don’t have a smartphone.

But I do have 1500 AT&T and 1000 Verizon. I therefore collect about $8000 a year in dividends from smartphone users.

Maybe they should call them dumbphones? Hey, guys, your former money is in my brokerage account!

1. I didn't know it was an olympic event

2. Maybe whites have better self esteem and don't have to have to have a phone in their ear 24/7 to feel good about themselves.

3. Maybe more whites were fully weened in their infancy and don't need an electronic 'blanky' to get them through life.

Not everyone has a want, need, or desire to play games, surf the web or call other people constantly. I have a Sansung flip phone that works just just fine for me when I want to make an occasional call to my wife, children or take a picture when I have forgotten my “real” camera. If I want to surf the web, I use my i7 quad core computer with a 24” screen at home.

Maybe they should call them dumbphones?

They are dumbphones, there is nothing smart about them. They don't do anything unless you input data into them. When phones can do something without the need of you physically inputting data, then you can call them smart.

Currently my 'smartphone' only is usefull as a PPD(Personnel Protection Device), in the event I need to throw it at someone. Costs too much money to get a new battery.
