JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A conservative fundraising group that had shied away from Missouri Rep. Todd Akin is now seriously considering whether to come to the embattled Republican's aid in his challenge to Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, an official with the group said Monday.
The Senate Conservatives Fund, which has raised more than $11 million for other Republican Senate candidates, could provide a much-needed financial boost for Akin, who is facing a Tuesday deadline on whether to stay in the race. Akin has vowed to remain in the contest. Appearing Monday at a Kirkwood, Mo., rally with former presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich, Akin said there had been discussions with the super PAC but no official agreement. The group previously had shied away from Akin, in part, because of his past use of spending earmarks to direct federal money to specific local projects. Earmarks now are banned in the Republican-controlled House, and Senate Republicans have voted not to use them.
In the primary, Akin aired an ad that touted a life saved by federal funding that some considered an earmark. But in a statement to The Associated Press last week, Akin said he backs a prohibition on earmarks in some circumstances.

Good for Gingrich! I am happy to see him stepping in on Akin’s side.
No harm funding him, and he better get elected. When Senate can have Al Franken, why not Akin?
We need Akin in the Senate.
We need ObamaClaire picking up trash alongside the roadways.
statist mouthpiece AP spinning about our guy todd akin, huh? no worries AP. we God fearing conservatives will continue to back our guy to the hilt, as long as he has the guts to battle on against both party’s media and elites.
if any republican group decides to support todd, i’ll go back to supporting them.
I would never donate a dime to any of these GOP orgs, ever.
If I had a dime.
Its beginning to dawn on some Republican fund raisers that Akin may win without their support (and what the consequences of their failure may be down the road).
Newt Gingrich Leads Charge in Missouri: Its Time for Republicans to Support Todd Akin (Video)
On the day of his fund-raising appearance with Congressman Todd Akin, Newt Gingrich called in to Jamie Allman in the Morning on FM News Talk 97.1.
Newt is the first big national candidate to come in and campaign for Todd Akin. He described the enormous gap between the two candidates:
I would simply say to anybody who has any confusion Six seconds of Todd Akin Saying something dumb doesnt offset six years of McCaskill voting destructively You know shes going to smear him because a straight up honest fight over her voting record shes just going to get wiped out.
St.Louis County in Missouri needs 700-800 more Republican Poll Workers.
If there are not enough Republican poll workers then Democrats end up being Republicans for the day. And we wonder why Democrats win? Keep in mind this is the state that Todd Akin is running against Claire McCaskill for U.S. Senate. Please St Louis county citizens respond to the call for poll workers right away. This is the most important election of our generation!
