Every person will face an ugly new reality when life as we know it vanishes. Its coming. Soon. It might be a slow crawl decline or a rapid descent into nightmarish conditions. Various scenarios now flit threateningly across the horizon. If were brave enough to peer into the abyss, we can see some of these events bordering on fruition. Most are unnerving; some will be paralyzing. Regardless of the fright factor, we must examine individually how to handle these looming crises. When they strike, people without a plan in place, will die.
So whats lurking about?

Do we really need input from the Art Bell wing of the prepper community?

I don’t know, did you want to give some input?

We’re rural. I’m prepping tomatoes right now. All we need is some more basics, that’s going to happen. We’re ready for the zombies.
To: Noumenon
I don’t know about war but there will definitely tough times with massive unrest in the cities.

I’m listening to the last of the lids to pop. 65 quarts this time. I was at it all weekend.

I live near water. I have some stores and defenses. If I did not have these I would be looking to move already.
Worst case... sail south till the butter gets soft then flip a coin, left or right?

I’m going to a pick your own place tomorrow. My last cans of tomatoes are ‘beeping’ at me. Tomorrow, I’ll get my last 30 quarts of tomatoes. Life is good.

I’ve got a lot of dry beans with more drying on the vines now. I’m thinking about canning a couple dozen cans of bean soup.

Seems that Paul simply dealt with the circumstances in which he found himself. Not the same as being stupid, or falling on the sword, but more like keeping this in perspective...the billion year perspective.

Any thoughts on leaving the US in the event of an 0bama win with eventual economic and civil strife?
The article did mention renting an apartment. Perhaps offshore is best.

I do a lot of trading with neighbors. I got the tomatoes by trading some of last year’s dry beans to a farmer who didn’t want the hassle of growing them. I have pickles coming from a neighbor I started plants for in the spring.

I’m not leaving. We have to fight right here. This is MY country. There’s no place else on earth that I’ll live.
To: cripplecreek
The battle lines, if we can call them that, will be everywhere. Right through some peoples’ living rooms. Pretty much like personal accounts of the times leading up to the first American Civil War.

I'm with you. The safest place for us is at home. I can defend it, it has water, I don't need power, and I have stores and ammo on hand.
We can withstand most scenarios for thirty days. After that, who knows.

The coming collapse will be global and I personally think the last thing I would want to be is a foreigner in a strange land. Canada might be OK.

I’ve divided my oregano 3-4 times, that plant is wild. I dehydrate a ton of herbs. I haven’t had any ‘sharing’ yet, but when neighbors figure out what they have, I’m sure that will happen. I’ll welcome it with open arms.

This is my home and the home of my fathers. Many in my family have died to give me this home.

Mack: Shame what this town's come to.
Charley Waite: You could do something about it.
Mack: What? We're freighters. Ralph here's a shopkeeper.
Charley Waite: You're men, ain't you?
Mack: I didn't raise my boys just to see 'em killed.
Charley Waite: Well you may not know this, but there's things that gnaw at a man worse than dying.
I don't seek death, but my children are grown even some of my grandchildren are. Why would I leave them less than what was left to me. Why would I expect to enjoy that which others sacrificed for and yet not be will to pay my own due to protected it even to the last full measure?

I live on the coast and there are dozens of those within 10 miles or so. I figure if worst comes I can always go find one of those. There’ll be plenty of bad guys on the water as well though.

IMO the subject is very important even if the author didn’t handle it as well as we wish. Most of us can’t afford the ultimate bug out. It pays to think through the options.

I just think that staying in your individual comfort zone is advantageous off the bat. You don’t have the psychology of being in an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar faces around.
I know a lot of people think about heading south from northern states but the cold has plenty of advantages too. Number 1 is the fact that the urban rats will be the primary group heading south.

IMHO it depends on what happens. A complete collapse will mean very few people are moving. Once the highways are blocked in Florida people won’t be moving far or fast through Florida, too much swamp.

It’s been a cheap place to live through the economic crisis, and it’ll be an escape shuttle if It has to be.
