While trying to teach the word “kvetch” to some friends of the non-Jewish persuasion, I was surprised to discover how much difficulty they encountered in keeping the pronunciation to one syllable. Most of them would say “ka-vetch,” unable to mouth the K and the V simultaneously. Is that universal among Gentiles, or am I surrounded by linguistically impaired friends?

Try getting people to pronounce athlete in 2 syllables. Same thing.
