He was a great straight man to Peter Sellers in those films.

As the crazed Police Chief Dreyfuss trying to kill Clouseau (Sellers), Lom almost managed to be as funny as Sellers in a number of scenes.

Rest in peace, Chief Inspector Dreyfus. I watched one of the Panther films just last night. Still very funny after all these years.

RIP. I still use the twitching left eye gag every time something goes “awry”, just as a joke; unfortunately it also happens every time I see or hear the jug-eared moron...

I too use it in my arsenal of facial expressions, was a big fan in my formative years...had a cat named Kato a dog named dreyfus and all my gold fish were named The Inspector, The Inspector II....

Pink Panther Theme Song (Mancini)

Another gem that Lom and Sellers were both in was the original "Ladykillers" movie (1955).

I also remember him fondly as Capt Nemo in “Mysterious Island” (1961)

Lom made the PP movies work. Without Lom’s slow (and sometimes not-so-slow) burns, Sellers wouldn’t have been as effective in those films. I was always bracing for the next incident in which “Dreyfus” would accidentally cut off his own finger or shoot off the tip of his nose while fuming at Clouseau.

Favorite scene:

[after an incident involving a blind beggar]

Dreyfus: The beggar was the lookout for the gang.
Clouseau: That is impossible. How can a blind man be a lookout?
Dreyfus: How can an idiot be a policeman? Answer me that!
Clouseau: Simple. All he has to do is enlist...
Dreyfus: Shut up!

Loved that man.
