Human Muscle, Regrown on Animal Scaffolding
NY Times ^ | September 16, 2012 | HENRY FOUNTAIN

In the months after a roadside bomb in Afghanistan blew off part of his left thigh, Sgt. Ron Strang wondered if he would ever be able to walk normally again.

The explosion and subsequent rounds of surgery left Sergeant Strang, 28, a Marine, with a huge divot in his upper thigh where the quadriceps muscle had been. He could move the leg backward, but with so much of the muscle gone he could not kick it forward. He could walk, but only awkwardly.

“I got really good at falling,” he said of his efforts. And Sergeant Strang...

“I thought, what looks like a tube?” he recalled. “A piece of intestine.” So using a research dog named Rocky, he replaced its main artery near its heart with a section of its small intestine. (“I’d have a tough time getting that experiment approved today,” Dr. Badylak said.)

--snip--

The scaffolding is isolated by stripping out all of the living cells from a tissue or organ, leaving an intricate three-dimensional web of proteins and other compounds. Removing the cells eliminates the possibility that the material, of animal origin, will be rejected outright by the body when it is implanted. But the matrix does provoke a less intense immune response, Dr. Badylak said, which is necessary for it to work. “You actually need the immune system to recognize the material.”

“The body can say, ‘This is not me,’ but the signals that are there are actually telling me that I need to rebuild that tissue,” he added.

The matrix has to be in contact with healthy tissue, which is why scar tissue must be removed first. “If it’s put in the middle of a scar, it doesn’t remodel because it’s not exposed to the bloodstream and sources of cells,” Dr. Badylak said...

Good news story! One of the reasons the “slimes” gets sourced is because of articles like this .But I can’t believe that none of the papers in New York didn’t pick this up unless they were given an exclusive. And many times they do. But I’ll be dammed if I’ll ever link to that commie paper .

What I encourage FRs doing posting is to check other publications before they post anything from the “slimes” and source them. Not The New York Times.

Search for extracellular matrix on Google News and Yahoo News. See what you get.

Yes, exciting developments. I notice that the subject of embryonic stem cells are studiously avoided.

Yes, this is amazing stuff. And twenty years from now when doctors are able to repair brain injuries with stem cells from other humans or animals ... what will Jesus say when they develop the first hermaphrodite that can reproduce with another morph?

I’m sorry but I don’t believe in using transplanted organs or stem cells from one human to another. You were conceived with one body and I believe you should die when it no longer functions well enough to keep you alive. We are not lab rats.

You're reading too much science fiction. The immunological problems are immense. Immunosuppressant drugs compromize immune systems.

We have been doing cornea transplants for 50 years. I would prefer that to being blind and a drag on my family.

Your mileage may differ.

The cornea is interesting, the one tissue of the body that doesn’t get cancer.

Re[ “Do a google seach on subject” Why should I ? I didn’t post anything on extracellular matrix.Very likely that piece was inspired by a PR sent out by the sourcing research organization unless it was handed directly to the NYT.

Fact is I rarely post in FR but do offer commentary to posts with interpretation or suggestion of a direction to take which all too frequently gets buried in an avalanche of vapidity.

The point is ;

Frequent sourcing of the New York Times as the do all and end all enhances its position as The “premier source” in the US which is why its readers world wide come out all too frequently with the wrong idea of what is going on .

The quicker we learn either to knock off using NYT and other MSM sources and either where possible question their authorship and intent or better yet their validity or pick another source the better off we’re going to be.

Lab-Made Eggs Produce Healthy Mice

(Newser) – A year back, scientists in Japan produced healthy mice from lab-created sperm; now, they've done the same with lab-made eggs. The project has big implications for humans, potentially paving the way for infertile men and women to have their own offspring. (snipped)

I don't believe this was what Our Savior intended for us to be doing.
