ADHD Vanity: Any FReeper a parent of a child with ADHD?

Posted on 09/30/2012 11:37:29 AM PDT by goodwithagun

I'm interested in how your child's ADHD diagnosis came about and how it affects your lives. I'm particularly interested in those using non-medical approaches to ADHD treatment such as vitamin/mineral supplementation and diet.

It’s definitely real but does NOT need to be treated with medication; the supplement magnesium is what he/she is deficient in.

You would not believe the list of symptoms that are present when mag is absent. ADD being one of many.

I’m going to trust the opinion of three different doctors, and the results of two extremely thorough bloodwork studies. He was never deficient in anything of any type. We tried non-mediation first, as we have a very prominent person in our family that is a total anti-medicine pro-natural-treatment guru. After reviewing the results, they reluctantly suggested we try to concerta. Their personal observations confirmed for them as well - it’s real, and it’s necessary to treat with medication.

HOWEVER, there are NO DOUBT misdiagnoses, overmedication, and I wholeheartedly agree that multiple opinions should be sought, AND non-medication solutions should be tried first.

Smalltown rag of the sensible sort, not wapo ;).

But when he was around ten he got hold of a single screwdriver and had 2 hours alone with the neighbour’s snowmobile. Just pieces left of the whole thing, nothing bigger than 5 inches. Drama.

Thing parked outside neighbour’s house, owner inside.

Sometimes kids that are have some level of dyslexia are mis-diagnosed ADHD...
they get probed and popped... & usually medicated to no productive end.

A lot of ADHD is complex mixed up mess:

(1) a kid frustrated by their own limitations,

(2) usualy (badly) mishandled by adults in their world who are looking for the most convenient solution.... AND

(3) Add considerable levels of boredom.... there ya go.

***********

The student needs to be comprehensively tested for ALL learning disabilities & learning style issues.

We had one child with some mild dyslexia. It was good that we were homeschooling at the time.... so "We the Parents..." made all the calls in finding the right solutions.

We found some very simple explanations and effective resources in a book by Ron Davis - "THE GIFT OF DYSLEXIA".

Hope this helps....

God bless...

Thank you for that. In karate and swimming lessons I’m made to feel like the bad parent, the one who does not discipline her child properly. My husband is home for 48 hours at a time so it’s not lack of proper male role model. In fact, my son’s 2-3 hours of bounce house/trike time is while my husband is working out. It’s their time together while our daughter is napping. We just left karate because my son could not focus and stay still. We’ve tried just about every method of discipline: spanking, time outs, taking away special toys, explaining good and bad behavior, etc. His actions continue. Right now he is in the kitchen jumping up and down in a circle while reading a Leap Frog book and sing a Taylor Swift song. He’s been up since 7 am and has had no nap. If I ask him to say a Hail Mary, Our Father, or his four karate statements (positive statements all his teacher’s students must memorize) he can rattle them off perfectly, all while fidgeting excessively and looking everywhere but at me. None of the other four year olds in his class can memorize the first one properly, but they can stay in their spot and mind the instructor. When an instructor works with him one on one, my son gets it instantly. When he’s with the small group he dances in a circle and violates the other students’ personal space. The child is intelligent, but just cannot focus regardless of what I do. At breakfast yesterday morning I actually considered tying him to his chair. I just couldn’t take it anymore.

“I have learned one thing, kids on ritilan have a 95% chance of being hooked on drugs as an adult.”

It has been my observation that kids who had to take ritalin (or adderall) grew up to hate taking any meds/drugs whatsoever. Are there studies you could link to confirm your 95% hooked on drugs assertion ?

My son was diagnosed in Elementary school. My concern was that well, to be honest, that he was a boy and all the cases I knew from fellow parents were all boys, wild young boys. No recess at school and no time to get rid of all that energy. He was put on Adderol and I gave him the medication...twice. Only twice. After watching a young boy cry his eyes out for hours and go on an emotional roller coaster and take me with him...that was it! No more Adderol. My solution was drastic...I quit my job and home schooled my son through the remainder of his elementary and middle school years. We let him go back to public school once he reached high school years, he played football, etc.
My son is now a senior in college, double majoring in Accounting and Finance and a minor in Economics. He wants to get his CPA. He has a job working as an intern at a small company so he is getting good work experience.
It was the hardest thing I EVER did. Ever. I second guessed myself to death! I didn't sleep at night worrying about what I was doing to my child! Now I look back at it, every moment I spent not sleeping was worth it. Every second. My son is a good and descent man and a wonderful son.
I gave up a lot to home school my son. But what he got out of it, is immeasurable. What I got out of spending that time with my son was precious. My bottom line....my son needed time to get outside and be a boy so that he could grow up and be a good man

Just so you know, you can’t test mag in the blood. mag is stored inthe bones and teeth, mainly, it is not in the blood by testable measure.

Dittos but also ensure the child gets enough sleep and don’t drag them all over the place.

Another vote for checking on food allergies. Our six-year-old daughter would go into screaming fits occasionally for no obvious reason. Dr. William Rea in Dallas tracked it to an allergy to cane sugar. We realized that her problems at school happened after she drank school-served chocolate milk.

Whoa!

Did you just say your child is FOUR?? And male?

I thought we were talking about a school-aged kid, one much older than your son.

Having reared three of those critters, I would say that, even with the hyperactivity, he sounds pretty normal.

Not every kid naps. Our three sons had a stay-at-home mom, their diet was healthy, bedtimes appropriate, and still two of the three exhibited strong ADD symptoms.

Please just accept that your preschooler is a handful and enjoy him. Set boundaries, lower the boom when he crosses the line, and learn to laugh.

I too have been diagnosed with ADHD and your description is good. The medication that was suggested to me would have taken away my medical for flying. So it was a choice between living the way that I always have or giving up flying. I don’t get as frustrated with myself knowing that it takes a little more determination on my part to finish projects and also to not interupt others when they are speaking. My father has the same issues.

ADHD is a made up disease to peddle drugs to children and make them easy to control.

No, it isn't. And it's a very difficult situation to deal with.

It existed before the 70s. My cousin was diagnosed as being hyperactive and dyslexic in the 60s. He has an incredible mind, but he still has a difficult time reading. I on the other hand was a voracious reader from an early age despite having many of the same attributes.

I have always had a very difficult time holding still. My wife points out that I am always moving my feet, hands, fingers or something. I see when my daughter and grandsons are doing the same thing, but am not generally aware when I am doing it myself.

LOL

I can attest to the fact that that works...from personal experience!

You need to get a serious pediatric evaluation. The behavior you describe is hardly normal and it is not really characteristic of ADHD.

You may make a very dangerous mistake by listening to the opinions posted here. FR has a history of ignorant idiot enthusiasts who don't "believe in" ADHD even though it was clinically characterized about a hundred years ago, when mothers stayed home, fathers were disicplinarians, and there was no TV.

Find a psychiatrist who specializes in spectrum disorders. From the brief description you gave, your son sounds more like Aspergers than ADHD.
