At Milkwood Farm we love both our rocket stove water heater and our mini rocket stove, but with winter taking hold I’m dreaming of new ideas, so I thought I’d review what else is out there.

DIY rocket stove technology is exploding world-wide at the moment – here’s a couple of the treasures I’ve come across:

Paul Wheaton's website, permies.com, has a lot of stuff on rocket mass heaters. Also, Jack Spirko has talked about them on The Survival Podcast.

A very interesting commercial rocket stove is the EcoZoom. Don't have one, but saw a friend's, and it burns very little twigs and generates a lot of cooking heat. Here is Jack Spirko demonstrating the EcoZoom.

Very like ash left. Good for you garden.

In my own test what I had left was mostly charcoal, which I could have used as fuel the on the next use.

Of course the most important feature of any piece of survival equipment is that it be concealable. You must be able to hide it from your non-prepper neighbors.

You are correct in all but motive.

I had my bike stolen recently. Not a great bike but I liked it. Someone else saw it and decided they liked it too.

My next bike will be stored out of sight and locked up.

Now is that because I want people to beg me to use my bike?

Or is it because I would like to keep my bike?

I did just buy a ready made one from StoveTec in Oregon. Normally I like to build things but this fall wanted to use the time to work on other hobbies — on this last “normal” Autumn before all hell breaks loose.

I cannot build a rocket stove but I can have hot water if the sun is shining. I use Camp Showers, put one on my deck, has a temperature gauge on it, and when the water is hot, I bring in for dishes or showering, whatever. I think I have five of them, I lost count over the years.

Hang one in the shower upstairs and have a hot shower. Hang one at the bathroom sink upstairs. Hang one at kitchen sink and one in downstairs bathroom sink. Anywhere you want running water when you don't have running water, use a Camp Shower.

Without starvation there is no begging. And without the begging, what’s the fun in being a prepper?

I enjoyed it even if the others didn't.

“And without the begging, what’s the fun in being a prepper?”

If you aren’t going to prepare anything now when you can, don’t expect someone else to feed your lazy self.

“I did just buy a ready made one from StoveTec in Oregon.”

I’ll check on these since I can’t make one myself.
