The government of Egypt has no stored wealth, no stored money, and no ability to import basis daily needs of the population.
Smaller cities like Marsah Mutrah are in a full blown Depression since the collapse of Mubarak’s government.
The placebo effect, steeped in religiosity, is the best available medicine to a population that is living off of less than US$1/day in disposable income.
Keep in mind that from Egypt all the way down to South Africa, camel and bovine urine is a regular feature of daily practiced folk medicine.
Marsa Mutrah would be in famine in under 72 hours if Egypt’s federal government cut the wheat and petrol subsidies. The Government of Egypt has less than 3 months worth of foreign currency reserves to maintain a reduced subsidy on these staple goods.
Horrible horrible near future is in store for the poor people in Egypt.
I wonder how many people are doing this treatment while wishing they could use / afford Western medicine.
Spengler has focused on Egypt repeatedly. Here's his most recent column from last Friday:
Palestinians ditched; Egypt next?
Earlier:
Excellent idea. I recommend 3-4 liters a day.
Mohammed, it's been said, is the perfect man. Anyone denigrating his health rituals is a blasphemer and an infidel. Islamic rage boy gonna rage and President Obama gonna apologize.
