What more can I tell my 25 year old son to keep him from traveling to Mexico ?
self

Posted on 10/02/2012 6:15:23 AM PDT by George from New England

My 25 year son was making a nice living playing online poker from the home in Florida that he owns. Then on April 15, 2011, Eric Holder shut the online poker activity within the U.S. Many in my sons's field are traveling to Rosario, Mexico (20 minutes south of Tijuana), opening bank accounts in Mexico and paying inexpensive rate to live there and play online for weeks at a time. All to get past the Holder U.S. blockage.

The rates are so low there right now because the tourism is virtually dried up from high crime and bad press. I pointed out to him the if occupancies are at 10% then the ratio of criminals to visitor will be 10 times what it used to be. I also point out that drugs and money is the target of the criminal element and that poker players can be a target just cause of the monies aspect.

I wonder how many Americans are now at risk cause of this Obama/Holder shutdown in the U.S.

Any other arguments or stories that Freepers can share here would be appreciated.

Take him to a local funeral parlor to pick out a coffin.

Dumb and ill-advised.

Make sure he has a will and that all his affairs are in order. Make note of all scars, tattoos and other identifying marks. Get a picture right before he plans to leave.

If he’s putting his $$ in a Mexican bank he can kiss it goodbye. This is from experience. Put it in there and see how much chance you have of getting it out. Endless delays, endless forms to be filled out -— you never fill them out correctly -— they tell you that’s the wrong bank account number, the compuer is down, they don’t understand this new program on the computer, bank manager wants bribes, you only get back a half or a fourth while they say they are waiting for somebody to fix the computer-— he will spend all his days in the bank lobby waiting until he is an old, old man.

Funny - a guy on my senior hockey team is facing the same thing!

Of course, we are very close to Canada, so he can go to the casinos there to play. Has your son looked into Canada? It’s not ideal, but its better than Mexico.

Step 1: On November 6, vote the Kenyan Interloper and his gang of thugs out of office.

Step 2: Try a Caribbean island instead. I hear there are some real nice places down there that are just as cheap as Mexico and a WHOLE lot safer.

If me must go to Mexico to play the game, why not Ensanada or some nicer place. What about Canada? I am sure there are other places that have not been banned by Holder.

He can gamble legally in this country. Introduce him to futures trading and stock day trading.

Can you somehow impress upon the lad that simply dedicating so much of his time and treasure to playing poker (on or off line) is in itself a debilitating and bottomless black hole devouring all he has to spend while on the face of this planet?

Poker is the prime example of a zero-sum game. For someone to win, somebody else has to lose, and this only excites the most base emotions a human being can experience, up to and including kicking over the poker table and gunning down all the other participants. Especially after the guy across the table has been gloating about taking all your chips.

“Step 1: On November 6, vote the Kenyan Interloper and his gang of thugs out of office.”

My son’s take is that the Republicans were going to shutdown the online playing anyway.

I know he won’t vote Obama but he has no hope either way.

Are you aware that Mitt's big money man lobbies against online gambling?

Sometime this past year a freeper started a vanity thread about either someone he knew or a friend of a friend who decided to leave Texas and seek out a dentist in Mexico to have some extensive dental work done that he figured would save him a lot of money. The FReeper claimed the guy wasn't heard from since........

Anybody recall that thread?

Tell him you're cutting him out of your will in one month.

Then mail him a copy of this thread.

Tell him that stupidity has a cure.... It’s called death..
Give him a large hefty bag with his name and return address on it and make sure to have him tell someone to collect all the pieces and put them in the bag before sending it back home...

You can’t do anything but pray a covering of protection over him. Think about it.... He plays poker! His risk aversion level has been tested and has been superseded. He makes calculated risk decisions thousands of times a day with every hand he plays. You have to remember that how he chooses to or not to do something is completely different than how you assess it. You will not be able to convince him other wise. I think the other freeper that said he will not be able to remove his money has an excellent point. I would ask him to begin to move his money out of mexico and see if he has problems doing it. It may wake him up that what he has may not be recoverable. He can understand that... not a ethereal safety issue .

Unfortunately, if he wants to push all in with “deuce seven off” that is his choice.
