My 25 year son was making a nice living playing online poker from the home in Florida that he owns. Then on April 15, 2011, Eric Holder shut the online poker activity within the U.S. Many in my sons's field are traveling to Rosario, Mexico (20 minutes south of Tijuana), opening bank accounts in Mexico and paying inexpensive rate to live there and play online for weeks at a time. All to get past the Holder U.S. blockage.
The rates are so low there right now because the tourism is virtually dried up from high crime and bad press. I pointed out to him the if occupancies are at 10% then the ratio of criminals to visitor will be 10 times what it used to be. I also point out that drugs and money is the target of the criminal element and that poker players can be a target just cause of the monies aspect.
I wonder how many Americans are now at risk cause of this Obama/Holder shutdown in the U.S.
Any other arguments or stories that Freepers can share here would be appreciated.
Appeal to his sense of risk and describe in realistic terms, the odds of him losing his life.
I would hope he can find a better way to make money soon, sounds like a literal dead end if he goes to Mexico.
Somehow, I don't think I'd be very relaxed in this environment.
Why in the world would he go to Mexico if he lives in Florida? Why wouldn’t he just go to the Bahamas, 85 miles away?
I think a lot of the FReepers suggestions are very intelligent. May I say that I would use GUILT. Okay, maybe it only works for Moms but do this: say, “if something happens to you, it will kill your Mother” or “I have never asked your for anything after raising you with love and commitment but I am going to ask you not to go to Mexico.. even if you don’t agree, do it for me”. Not sure of your financial status but maybe if you offer a few bucks to go to Canada.. he will see you are serious. When all else fails.. cry. Perhaps I am giving away too many Mom secrets but crying (even faked) will bring him around to see how worried and distressed you really are. Good luck, George.
Take out a term life insurance policy on him, make sure the U.S. embassy has his picture and learn a bit of Spanish.

1. If I were moving anywhere to play online poker I’d go to Costa Rica. Much safer than Mexico, cheap, lots of American expats, beautiful, poker-friendly. Lots of the online poker sites are based there.
2. He could move to a place in the US where poker is legal and play in casinos or poker rooms. Vegas is one option but not the only one. I would think this would be a lot better than moving to drug territory in northern Mexico.
3. Poker is a fine hobby but as a career it’s not the most stable or good for long-term well-being. I think banning it online (or in real life) is stupid, but that’s not likely to change under a Romney administration. Maybe this is a good time for him to reevaluate his long term plans and make a career change.
There is no rule of law in Mexico and Americans are considered deserving of punishment for being Americans. It is likely he will never see any money from Mexico, just a lengthy prison sentence unless he can persuade you to send money to pay his large "fine".
You can let him know you won't do that.
Finally, you can let him know that should he ever get out of Mexico, he will likely have serious IRS troubles when he returns, unless he hires an excellent tax lawyer before he goes down there and engages in any financial transactions. The reporting requirements are ridiculously rigorous and viciously enforced. They'll take everything he owns for the slightest oversight.

It took me less than 30 seconds to clear customs both ways on Sunday. That was exceptional, but nice and I'm sure he can obtain the same documentation that I have.
I'm fairly certain that's what caused my hypertension. But it's a better way to go than Mexico.
Rosario, Mexico isn’t that bad compared to North Eastern, Mexico. It is a big fishing port and not really known for drug crime. He could do worse.
Suggest that he go to Honduras instead. It’s cheaper, safer, and far more pleasant. I have a home on the Caribbean coast, and you can’t beat Honduras for a lovely lifestyle. Personally, i would suggest he grab an apartment in La Ceiba. Nice city. Very laid back. And the government leaves you alone.

My two oldest children are 25 & 23. I feel your pain. They also know when Dad's about to impart some fatherly wisdom...it starts with a completely off-the-wall observation. For example, "have you heard about the latest Darwin Award winner?"
