This event is a blast. Planning to attend all three days.
Sorry it was Dave Letterman that introduced them :/
Nice!
Wow! What a line-up!
I’ve seen Steve Earle, Robert Earl Keen, and The Lumineers all playing free instore concerts this year.
Last time I caught the Knitters, there was great interaction between John Doe and Dave Alvin on guitars.
Enjoy.
Still trying to make my way around the site to hear something :/
any links to good banjo or guitar?
Nice lineup, and the festival is well named.
It is not a bluegrass festival, for sure. Of the “founding fathers” segment, only Earl Scruggs would carry a “bluegrass father” label (and of course Bill Monroe, Doc Watson was vehement he was “not a bluegrass artist”, but a traditional plus one. Earl and Doc both passed away this year. Warren Hellman underwrote the festival until his death in ‘11.
Warren Hellman has set up a foundation to continue funding it for at least 15 more years.
Also.. if you know of any Bluegrass ping lists, please tell them to put me on...
That 9yo kid is a natural.. mid brother is good, but not as good.. worried about the oldest though :p .. (I believe he is 15, or was at the time it was recorded)..
My pop said he learned guitar when he was about 12... banjo on Navy ships between points... I have a B/W photo somewhere around here of my pop playing banjo on a ship (not sure which) when he was about 17-18..
Also.. made a thread about Bluegrass several months ago.. but too many past posts to wade through :/
There might be a C&W ping list. Maybe I’ll start an Americana Music ping list.
Incidentally, Chris Thile, mandolinist who plays with the Punch Brothers (I don’t see them on the schedule) has just won the MacArthur ‘Genius’ Grant.
If you do PLEASE add me!
Other than that, I will try to see Kieran Kane, Kevin Welch & Fats Kaplin (love their music), Buddy Miller (always worth seeing), Giant Sand (longtime favorite of mine), The Time Jumpers, and Dwight Yoakum, whose music I am not too familiar with.
If I wasn’t so buy taking care of “World of Warcraft” websites, I would try to make a ping list :p
The history and music.. and the History OF music (culture) is most important to me..
BUT, I put myself in a bad spport about 4 years ago... have about 650 people following me on the ‘Imaginary’ side.... can’t just up and quit :/
Unfortunatly, I'm on the wrong coast. Do not miss Dirty Three, if you don't know about them.
Thank you for the pointer.. going to search for them now :)
The best thing about HSB is that it is free!
Be sure you don't miss Dwight Yoakam either.
