A COUPLE who spent £6,000 rescuing a cat from Arab Spring violence have been left devastated – after the moggy ran away.

Railton and Dawn Elliott fell in love with “Omar” while on holiday in Egypt and decided to save him from the trouble sweeping the country by bringing him home to the UK.

They shelled out a fortune in quarantine and vets’ bills and the lucky cat settled into his new life at their home in rural Oxfordshire.

But Omar vanished two weeks ago – almost a year to the day after he left quarantine.

Dawn, 46, who runs a confectionary company with her husband, said: “We’re absolutely heartbroken.

What a catastrophe! The owners must be catatonic! I’ll bet he hopped a catamaran to Catalina.

Rural area? the owners probably let him run around outside ... and wonder why he doesn’t come back. Any number of reasons. Maybe a fox et ‘im. I hope not ... but if you let a cat run around outside, you’re taking a gamble.

How sad, but cats should be kept indoors. Too many things can happen to them outside.

Maybe he was mad at them for giving him a Muslim name.

Adorable cat!

Something similar happened to us. [But not nearly the expenditure of these folks] I had brought home a cat that was wailing in a shrub at work for week. The poor thing was scrawny and full of fleas and ticks.

The vet treated him and brought shots up to date, yada.........at a cost of about $300. It turns out that shortly after he was beginning to settle in, we moved. We’ve moved with animals successfully B4 and we had a good idea of what to do. One of my sons drove the cat over to the new house in a carrier....and when he let the cat out of the carrier, he didn’t notice the door was still ajar. Cat bolted. We never saw it again.

Agreed. My cats were all strays, but once they came into my home, they didn’t go out. My present cat runs away and hides under my bed if I just open the door to get the paper. He never wants to go outside. He had enough of the outdoors.

I guess he was named after Omar Sharif.

Hope they bothered to have him chipped...not that that is foolproof.

Absolutely true. They'll almost certainly come back if they can. If they don't it's a very bad sign.

I agree..my cats stay inside..no way I would let them outside and especially not if I spent 1000s to bring them home.
