One of my cats, Whitey, is sick. Until last Friday, she's been very active and eating a lot until she became kind of skittish and aloof and cut back on her eating. She sleeps a lot and still drinks water but eats sporatically. I think it could be a hyperactive thyroid, I had a similar experience with another cat where she was put on meds and responded well and lived a few years afterward. My other guess is maybe bad teeth, but I point towards the former. I'm hoping it is that or at least something that is treatable. I'm just asking for prayers and well wishes as I take her to the vets tomorrow. She is 11 years old and one time when Obama came on the TV, she swatted at him and hissed. B-)

I’ve said a prayer for Whitey and you. That is an adorable picture of her and her mother. The unconditional love of our animals makes all the difference in life.
My three longhairs have their paws crossed for Whitey.
Praying for Whitey. I pray for my cat too and believe it’s what has kept her with me. She’s been through a lot and has always bounced back. She’s diabetic and has been on the brink of death many times with refusing to eat and serious weight loss.
You definitely need to get him an appetite stimulant - but sometimes it’s difficult to get it into them. I have used pill pockets, but I have also had the medicine compounded into liquid. At any rate, when my cat won’t eat, I force feed. I do this with those tubes that you use to draw up medicine for kids. I wrap her a towel and inject the food going in from the side of the mouth, not from the front. After forcing for a day or two, she’ll start eating on her own.
Also, if he’s not drinking, ask the vet if he can have subcutaneous fluids. They may be willing to sell you a bag and teach you how to administer them yourself to save money.
She is a beauty, and I know very dear to you. Having a sick pet makes you feel so helpless. Do the best you can for her and then put her in God’s hands. Prayers up for Whitey.
My beloved Siamese stopped eating at 15 yrs old and went downhill. Never did find out what was wrong. Probably organ failure, as he damn near killed himself eating Ibuprofen years earlier that only transfusions saved after a week. Probably killed his liver and it caught up with him.
Watching them go is tormenting, I know how you feel.
My cat had a thyroid problem and is now on some medicine and has been doing well for nearly a year. Prayers for you and your cat.

get bloodwork. liver and pancreas issues are common in older animals, also in older animals their appetites will decrease as they age, but also their tastebuds and what they like to eat can change too. stuff theyonce liked can taste funny to them and they won’t eat it anymore. sometimes it’s easy to switch a food with a different one they do like.

I doubt hyper-thyroid will be the diagnosis. I’ve been through that with one of our cats and you can’t feed them enough. They’re NEVER satisfied - gotta have more, more, more. And no matter how much you feed them, they’ll lose weight.
The worst-case scenario could be kidney problems. The symptoms you list are there. Fortunately, there’s a med they can take that can give them a quality life for a few more years. Azodyl.
We have a LOT of cats and have had several go through kidney troubles. It’s common in older cats. Azodyl gave them two to four more good years when before it came out, we were lucky to keep them going more than six months.
I hope your kitty has something much simpler going on but this is one diagnosis that you should be prepared to hear. If your vet doesn’t keep Azodyl on hand, tell him/her to get it. I swear by the stuff.

Prayers up for Whitey. If it turns out to be kidney related, switch him to the food the vet recommends. Well worth the extra cost. Our 12 yr. old kitty has been doing well on it since some minor kidney problems years ago.
Hope you’ll give us an update on Whitey.
