Everyone’s talking about the presidential debate this morning, so I thought I’d open up the conversation here.

There wasn’t much said on the life issue last night, although President Obama did make a strange comparison between Wall Street reform and living wills:
We stepped in and had the toughest reforms on Wall Street since the 1930s. We said you’ve got – banks, you’ve got to raise your capital requirements. You can’t engage in some of this risky behavior that is putting Main Street at risk. We’re going to make sure that you’ve got to have a living will, so – so we can know how you’re going to wind things down if you make a bad bet so we don’t have other taxpayer bailouts.
The topic of death panels came up, although not in so many words. Per Romney, a point he managed to make six different times during the debate (and which Obama weakly and falsely denied once), speaking about Obamacare…
Number three, it puts in place an unelected board that’s going to tell people, ultimately, what kind of treatments they can have. I don’t like that idea.
The topic of the sanctity of preborn life almost came up, as did the topic of euthanasia/assisted suicide. I was really hoping when Romney started this soliloquy he’d go there. He certainly created openings but just didn’t walk through them. He did touch on the religious freedom issue, though:
The role of government is to promote and protect the principles of those documents. First, life and liberty. We have a responsibility to protect the lives and liberties of our people, and that means the military, second to none. I do not believe in cutting our military. I believe in maintaining the strength of America’s military.
Second, in that line that says, we are endowed by our Creator with our rights – I believe we must maintain our commitment to religious tolerance and freedom in this country…
We’re a nation that believes we’re all children of the same God. And we care for those that have difficulties – those that are elderly and have problems and challenges, those that disabled, we care for them.
I loved the transcript of Obama’s response:
