Entire Cities In World of Warcraft Dead, Hack Suspected
Slashdot ^ | 10/7/2012 | hypnosec

Posted on 10/07/2012 6:53:05 PM PDT by vbmoneyspender

"Entire cities in the World of Warcraft have been destroyed with no one spared, not even the NPCs. About 13:00 GMT, forums on WOW started getting the first comments from users regarding players and NPCs dying on the Ragnaros-EU realm in Orgrimmar. Users of the online game started reporting that Draenor had a similar sight to offer. Some of the other realms where this was reported include Tarren Mill, and Twisting Nether."

Also at Joystiq, and (with more screenshots) at WCCF Tech, which reports that "it appears the damage is most severe in World of Warcraft European servers."

There are rumors that folks over at Blizzard were already aware of a hack and were working on [a way] to resolve the issue but before they fixed the issue, they actually blocked the hackers who were behind the exploit. This got the hackers angry and they went on to kill everyone in the cities. More on this as we find out.

Some particular user going by the name ‘Jadd’ has posted a video claiming to have nuked entire cities. There is no official news of Blizzard as yet about the reason behind the dead cities. We have got the videos [below].

Hilarious. We should have a do-over of the jobless rate, I bet there are several hundred thousand more “looking for work” now.

I swear that graphic looks like a picture of a close friend of mine. He was a well-know admin in World of Warcraft, until he died of a heart attack over a year ago. I never understood the game, despite him trying to show me. That world was his life. After his retirement he told me he just wore his shorts sitting at his computer and would eat and sleep there, playing for days and days. A neighbor called the police when he didn’t come out for days and they found him dead at his computer. The game is addictive and dangerous!

The game has had up to 11 million subscribers at one point. Given that we haven’t had a sudden influx of millions of dead geeks I’d say the issue has less to do with the game and more to do with an addictive personality combined with poor health.

Me: "Dad, in 2012, news will come from virtual worlds that exist only on computer servers"
Dad: "What? Have you been in granny's cooking wine?" Beating commences.

Dad would never have believed this.

Maybe this is the AMA’s first strike.

The spiders and snakes play Twister down there.

They’re pretty quiet, for the most part.
