This one is by ‘Francis’. It’s an act but a lot of folks thought it real.

My BiL is a “white-hat” hacker and attends conventions, including gaming ones. The games are designed to be addictive.

These games, pretty much ALL computer games are designed as “Skinner boxes” which reward the players based on variable input - sort of like a rat hitting a lever. The payout has to be variable - if it becomes predictable, or is too low, the rat, er, player will eventually lose interest.

The games are designed to be addictive.

As are most games with varying degrees of attraction. I don't blame the game for his heart attack, he wasn't paying attention to his health. My friend had other things going on, involved in various organizations and charitable to others. He also chatted with other gamers world-wide through the game as an admin, dispensing help to others. However, he did play a lot at all hours of day and night.

I feel the addiction was the opportunity to play-act as other characters that he could not achieve in real life. In a game, you can have the looks and powers that you weren't given in real life. This is not necessarily a bad thing, and possibly brings fulfillment and happiness to many. The risk is getting so deep into the fictional characters that one neglects their external health and obligations. My friend was neglecting bills and getting into financial problems, this is something I feel was indirectly caused by the game.

with respect, he allowed the game to become the excuse to neglect his bills and other things in the real world. because he did that, the real world for him began to become worse and worse, and he spent more time in WoW. vicious circle. but one he created and fostered, sadly.

I agree. Was working on that idea with my BiL. General theory was that could be a time-out - no more than 8 hours on line at time. Problem would be the loss of revenue, multiple accounts, etc.

Another method would be to start toning down the rewards after x number of hours, until, after a while there no rewards at all. After a decent interval off-line, the account resets and rewards start again. That doesn’t handle multiple accounts, though.

Problem is, forcing such an implementation would violate my belief that government should intervene as little as possible. Parents should supervise kids (Our kids like “Minecraft” whatever the heck that is) and limit their time and access. Adults are on their own...

people have to remember that the culture war is never lost. that’s really what the other side is hoping you believe, because they will never stop. we must never stop. people have to stop being pusies and understand every day we live our values hard and push our values unapologetically, unashamed. shame those that try to shame you. embarrass those who try to embarass you. your core’beliefs are who yo are, you live those every day. frickin have the nuts to fight for them. you can fight smart too without being like a liberal ass.

nut up. martin luther said every day is a fight with your old Adam (your bad side/sin nature). well until Christ comes back you’re dealing with everyone else’s too, and many of them are unsaved and going to be in direct opposition to you, pushing core beliefs opposed to yours and trying to get you to cave on yours. help who you can help, try to reason with those who are open to reason, and don’t waste your time with the hardcore oposition, don’t let them get you down. they will always be there, just keep chugging away, just keep proving them wrong, every day. let them be the ones who can’t let little sh1t go, let them be unable to get to sleep because their marxist utopia is never just quite perfect enough, let them flail around because they keep losing elections. let them tear their hair out and scream and rant and give themselves heart attacks because they can’t handle not geting what they want, and they see their numbers of their faithful dwindling.

crap, stay inthe game, we’re doing better than a lot of people think, given the establishment of everyone against us - pop culture, the media, the unions, the other takers, the liberal politicians watching their plans and cities go up in smoke.

freaking stay in the game and play smart. help out someone else. be freaking useful to someone.

going galt doesn’t mean not being productive or useful to others, it’s just trying to do that in a position that minimizes your exposure to government.

Earlier today, certain realms were affected by an in-game exploit, resulting in the deaths of player characters and non-player characters in some of the major cities. This exploit has already been hotfixed, so it should not be repeatable. It’s safe to continue playing and adventuring in major cities and elsewhere in Azeroth.

As with any exploit, we are taking this disruptive action very seriously and conducting a thorough investigation. If you have information relating to this incident, please email hacks@blizzard.com. We apologize for the inconvenience some of you experienced as a result of this and appreciate your understanding.
