Suppose there could only be 5 Federal holidays...and you got to choose them.  Which would you pick?
Me

Posted on 10/09/2012 9:59:30 AM PDT by Joseph Harrolds

Suppose that for whatever reason, the United States decided to limit the number of Federal holidays to five...and it's up to you to decide which five they are.  Which would you pick?  For reference's sake, here's the current list:

New Year's Day
Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
President's Day
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Columbus Day
Veterans Day
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day

If there's a holiday you want that's not on the list, you can pick it.

Full disclosure:  I'm stealing the idea from this thread from Democratic Underground:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021495822

The most five most popular holidays at DU are Labor Day at #1 (big shock there), followed by Independence Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving Day, and New Year's Day.  Christmas didn't make the cut, coming in at #7.  Surprisingly, there wasn't a single vote for Martin Luther King's Birthday...although Election Day was almost as popular Christmas, and there were multiple votes for a Generic Religious Holiday Day as well the various solstices and equinoxes.

They also want to change Columbus Day to the Indigenous Day of Remembrance...

Anyhoo, I'll start it off with my 5 picks:

Memorial Day
Independence Day
Veterans Day
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day

I’m not a Christian, never have been. I was born and raised Jewish, though I no longer practice Judaism.

That said, if I were President, I would definitely declare American Christian Heritage Day, to recognize that critical role that the Christian worldview played in our nation’s founding.

I may not be a Christian, but I thank God every day that our nation was founded by people who mostly were.

Oh, and all five holidays WILL be celebrated on the actual date. In the event that the holiday falls on a weekend, Columbus Day or Lincoln’s Birthday could be added to the mix.

Could we swap out Labor Day for some sort of 9/11-linked Patriot Day that would still mark the end of summer, but consist of barbecues and Americana and all things red, white & blue?

I would choose:
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Veterans Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day

I had trouble with Christmas day, but because it has become a universal holiday anyway, might as well keep it.

I picked holidays that are based on our national identity. If we are limiting holidays, that is what a “national” holiday should be, days that we celebrate aspects of our nation. Nothing against religious holidays or birthdays, but then you get into fights over whose birthday.

If I were celebrating birthdays, I’d probably choose Washington and Lincoln; but someone else might think Jefferson was more important, or Adams. A liberal might well think Roosevelt deserves a holiday. We’d all like to celebrate Reagan’s birthday.

Then you get into minority representation. If we were doing so, I’d do Thurgood Marshall rather than Martin Luther King, because Marshall was part of the government, King was not.

I thank God every day that our nation’s founding was made possible in no small part by a Pennsylvania Jew who provided so much of the financing necessary during those dark days of Valley Forge and afterward. Few Americans even know his name.

Suppose we limited the laws to 5 pages. What would you keep? This is what is needed to keep government limited, quantify it as not government is becoming unlimited.

Currently there are tens of thousands of pages of laws and even more of government regulations.

Yes true , then we’d have to limit the laws to the number of words and letters, limit it to 5000 words of laws. this is the only solution I see, quantify limited government as the founding fathers tried to limit government with the constitution but democrats have gone around the constitution the latest is the 3000 pages of Obamacare that already has 13,000 pages of government regulations ( there is no way the constitution intended this monstrosity )

Let’s see. Keep:

- Washington’s (or Lincoln’s) Birthday
- Memorial Day (roll Veteran’s Day into this as well)
- Independence Day
- Thanksgiving
- Christmas

Optional:
- Super Bowl Monday (need to recover from the booze and food)
- New Year’s Day (same reasoning)

WAAAAAAY OUTTA HERE:
- Labor Day (too Unionized)
- MLK Birthday (40 years after his assassination, how far have race relations digressed? Even King would be ashamed!)

How about this:

If the “Law” won’t fit on a 3x5 card, in 8pt type, declare it an onerous POS, and scrap it, until it will fit, concisely and clearly. IMO, there’s no “Law” which can’t be revised to fit that criteria.

That's a good idea too. But I meant keep the total number of all federal government laws to 5 pages ( or 5000 words). It's not just that laws are too long but that there are too many laws .Every year there are thousands of pages of laws passed at all levels of government :This is chocking our businesses and freedom, and capitalism.

Government is the problem and needs to be limited. So the only way is to quantify it at all levels, limit every government state, federal, local to 5 pages of laws.

It is obvious democrats violated the constitution that intended to keep a limited government . but they can't violate a constitution that limits government numerically.

I have always disputed the King birthday as being hollow, empty and illegitimate.

All veterans both living and no longer with us, including all Congressional Medal Of Honor winners, get one day named “Veteran’s Day”.

Presidents, all of them, get one day.

Now, along comes a known conscientious objector who never held elective office and he gets his own day? There is absolutely no logic to that whatsoever.

My five:

Christmas Day
Memorial Day
Veteran’s Day
Thanksgiving Day
Independence Day
