Thanksgiving and the Friday after
Christmas day, New Year’s day, Independence day, Thanksgiving and George Washington’s birthday.
I’m not a Christian, never have been. I was born and raised Jewish, though I no longer practice Judaism.
That said, if I were President, I would definitely declare American Christian Heritage Day, to recognize that critical role that the Christian worldview played in our nation’s founding.
I may not be a Christian, but I thank God every day that our nation was founded by people who mostly were.
I picked 6. I won’t give up any of those.
Oh, and all five holidays WILL be celebrated on the actual date. In the event that the holiday falls on a weekend, Columbus Day or Lincoln’s Birthday could be added to the mix.
Abraham Lincoln's birthday on February 12th
George Washington's birthday on February 22nd
Easter (Good Friday or Day after)
New Year’s Day
Could we swap out Labor Day for some sort of 9/11-linked Patriot Day that would still mark the end of summer, but consist of barbecues and Americana and all things red, white & blue?
I would choose:
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Veterans Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
I had trouble with Christmas day, but because it has become a universal holiday anyway, might as well keep it.
I picked holidays that are based on our national identity. If we are limiting holidays, that is what a “national” holiday should be, days that we celebrate aspects of our nation. Nothing against religious holidays or birthdays, but then you get into fights over whose birthday.
If I were celebrating birthdays, I’d probably choose Washington and Lincoln; but someone else might think Jefferson was more important, or Adams. A liberal might well think Roosevelt deserves a holiday. We’d all like to celebrate Reagan’s birthday.
Then you get into minority representation. If we were doing so, I’d do Thurgood Marshall rather than Martin Luther King, because Marshall was part of the government, King was not.
I am Barack Obama, and I approve this message. :)
EVERY day is “Stay Away From MLK Jr. Blvd. Day”.
I thank God every day that our nation’s founding was made possible in no small part by a Pennsylvania Jew who provided so much of the financing necessary during those dark days of Valley Forge and afterward. Few Americans even know his name.
4th of July
College Football Day (Jan 1)
