Police in Manchester Township, NJ are investigating a mysterious boom that shook block after block in the Ocean County community Thursday night. Residents say it felt and sounded like an explosion.

“It was so loud that my windows were rattling" said Jayne Yereance. "I really thought the house next door blew up. That’s how bad it was.”

Residents say there have been similar incidents since the summer. Police are trying to determine if they're connected, but investigators don't yet know where the sounds are coming from or who is responsible.

There's been no damage and no one's been hurt, but many people are on edge.

"I really wish they would knock it off so we can stop jumping out of our skin” Marissa Bartles said

"a mysterious boom"

If they don't know what the boom is then why do they assert it to be mysterious? Hm?

"I really wish they would knock it off so we can stop jumping out of our skin”

Marissa should cry me a river.

Growing up under the pattern of a major SAC base during the mid cold war years, if the B-52s or KC-135s didn't drown out the conversation, something going supersonic did.

Until I was 7, I thought windows just cracked and had to be replaced.

The Lakehurst military base is nearby, but authorities don't think that's the source of the booms.

The Lakehurst military base is nearby

First off it's Lakehurst Naval Air Base. (idiot reporting.)

Secondly McGuire Air Force Base is just a few nautical miles south.

Hiking in the NJ Pine Barrens I often wondered about the zipping sound I would occasionally hear. Turned out it was Air Force Reserve firing off A10 rounds.

Down in Atlantic County there is another airfield that trains military cargo aircraft. Also Dover Delaware has air flight training.

These are sonic booms or the over enthusiastic pilot wagging wings for his family. Yes they do it. I saw one last week.

Haven’t there been several towns, in different regions, that have reported mysterious booming noises in the past year or two?

The unusual booms in Wisconsin not long ago were determined to be earthquakes.

Sounds like something we’ve been experiencing in northern NJ in the last couple of years: Earthquakes.

These are small, very localized earthquakes. They feel different from California-style quakes. Most people describe them as sounding like a loud explosion.

In my town these quakes scared the heck out of people in a neighborhood near me a few weeks ago. Neighbors ran out of their houses, terrified that a bomb must have gone off. A short distance away, nobody noticed anything.

North Jersey had a really weird quake a couple of years ago. It felt and sounded like someone had switched on a gigantic vibrator right outside our house. Bzzzzzzzz. No kidding.
